Peacocks are noisy, messy, dangerous, and carry bird flu and other diseases. Like our Legislature, the Prosecutor gets caught up in frivolous matters, while ignoring more serious matters. Give the lady a medal.

wharfrat wrote: Me thinks someone dressed as a peacock should do the same to her. Cruelty to any living thing is not right. She should have gotten a water gun and shot a stream of water at it. Those "mating" doves with their irritating mating noise sit on my window ledge and I shoot a water pistol at them. It works, they go bother someone else. But to kill with a bat, that is cruelty. Killing a nuisance bird is not cruelty, but I do like your water boarding proposal for dealing with terrorist peacocks.

Kehaulani wrote: <quoted text> And perhaps there would be less of an outrage by folks (myself included) had she NOT taken that Babe Ruth bat out. There's no need to advocate such a horrendous infliction of pain and suffering to a mere animal. We all have to deal with stuff we don't like. I'm personally tired of the tons of chickens now living with my neighbors in my suburbian town. Weary of the tons of feral cats. Yet there's a reason they make cat traps. And since Ms. Maloney was able to actually grab the peacock, she could have easily boxed/caged it and called the Humane Society to haul the bird away. I think the point is that we don't have to put up with animal inconveniences, but we can do so in a friggin humane manner, too. Is that too much to ask? Yeah, give it the Humane Society which will just kill it by lethal injection. That's so much less cruel tahn instantaneous death by a bat.

Funny how the white trashy haoles come to Hawaii and want to change our land and culture. Having been a resident in Hawaii all my life, I come to appreciate everything that God has placed here. I can blend in with nature.

When I am at the bus stop, I always feed the birds away from the crowd as they all may not like the birds. Some people sure can have a mean streak!

Carlisle's decision to prosecute this woman is outrageous. First of all, killing a peacock that has become a pest is authorized and not cruelty to animals. Second, the State, the City, and the Humane Society has known about the noise and other problems for years and have done nothing to resolve this problem. Like other pests in Hawaii, peacocks are allowed to multiply without any effective control measues. Finally, there have been many cases of people killing peacocks (such as the use of bows and arrows at Waimea by the Audobon Society) and to my knowledge nobody was prosecute in the past. Not cool, Carlisle.

Saying that "God" placed peacocks here is like saying "God" also placed everything from cigarette butts to coqui frogs here. I guess you can take the view that "Man" is God's creation, and therefore anything that Man does is God's work as well. In that case, we'd pretty much have to accept and appreciate anything and everything that is in this world. Personally, I don't agree with that view.

What is it with the recent rash of crimes against animals? Two pet pigs killed by hunters, one pet dog eaten, seabird colony disappears under suspicious circumstances, monks seals shot, and now a peacock bludgeoned to death. The animals in turn take revenge via dog bite cases and the swine flu. They're gonna have to make a special animal criminals' ward at OCCC. Maybe they're filming "Animal Cops: Hawaii" here and they needed material. The world is going nuts. Maybe the aliens will come in and just kill us all, start all over.

Get It Straight wrote: <quoted text>Peacocks are not a part of "Hawaiian culture." They are an introduced pest, ironically probably brought in to help create some non-Hawaiian's idealized vision of what this "tropical paradise" should be like. I don't like cruelty to animals, but only wish that she had used a more humane way of achieving her goal. From what I've heard, peacocks can drive you nuts with their screeching, not to mention their massive poops all over. OK, I guess I stand corrected. The peacocks were apparently introduced to Makaha Valley by none other than Princess Ka`iulani. I eat my words and kick myself. Having admitted my guilt, though, does the fact that a Hawaiian monarch make it "right" to have peacocks running around? I say no. The Hawaiians as a society were at various points in their history both awesome and terrible stewards of the `aina, and Ka`iulani was also but one individual, albeit royalty. Ironically, instead of peacocks there probably would've been large, flightless birds - moa nalo - running around Makaha had the early Hawaiians not (apparently) wiped them out. So I still wouldn't shed any tears if all the feral peacocks were gone, but I apologize for my error.

What this woman did IS cruelty to animals and she should be prosecuted to the FULLEST extent of the law. Yes, the peacocks are loud, however, viciously killing them is NOT a solution. Invest in a good set of earplugs and some Ambien. What is next for this self-proclaimed vigilante once she has eradicated all peacocks...the homeless along the beach?

Anyone who is not a vegan is very likely directly or indirectly responsible for cruelty to animals.

Yes they were introduced by the Europeans, but were embraced by the Ali'i and Royals. Eaten and allowed to roam the Royal Gardens. Bashing an animals' eyes out is unacceptable. Culling the population might be more appropriate, they are tasty. Allowing ones' rage to turn to premeditated violence is just plain wrong. Too many deer on the mainland=a regulated hunt/cull. Slaughter is not the answer. And to the "haole" haters...every resident in these islands is a decendant of immigrants. Remember: before the Europeans there were no "Hawaiian" Bracelets or gold for that matter. So keep driving your Ford and shopping at Walmart, and enjoy that 44oz. McDonalds Coke!

Why do you have to use earplugs? It doesn't solve the main problem. She's probably not the only one getting irritated with this nuisance. Also this is not about kids, cars, the homeless or what nots. Stick to the subject at hand. Too many people bring up 'what ifs'. And many people are fixated on haoles being the bad guy. At least she took action when no one else would. Is killing a bird murder? Get real people.. birds are not human beings.
