Yes I have. I had a deadbeat spouse who didn't know that a job that pays, is a job that feeds. Unfortunately, I had no choice but to file for food stamps and supplemental income because the loser spouse was too busy working on making a dent in the couch and running up the electricity by using the television, 24/7, 365 days. Not to mention, the food intake was horrendous.

So, it all boiled down to...GET RID OF THE LEACH. It's a good thing I was given a promotion that would allow me to support my kids and myself. I worked generously took out an additional 5% of my wages towards taxes for a whole year to try and pay back what I used while receiving welfare assistance.

Until about 4 years ago, there were military people in Hawaii collecting WIC even though they made over $50k a year. If they lived in military housing, they did not recieve BAH, therefore it did not show up as income even though they had a free house to live in with ZERO utilities. I had a couple friends that were E-7 CPOs in the Navy with 2 kids and qualified for WIC.

Recently (last 3-4 years) they changed the rules so all military get payed their BAH. Because of being paid for housing, many stopped qualifying for WIC.

When I arrived in Hawaii to attend UH in '76, I missed the registration day and had to wait for the next semester to enroll. A friend convinced me to apply for food stamps. I did and qualified.

Back then, they sent you a booklet of stamps in different denominations which you tore out and gave to the cashier. Frankly, with the rest of the people in line behind me giving me the "stink eye," I was ashamed to do that. I even remember one cashier (at Star Market in Moiliili) giving me a look that said, "What's this young hippy-looking haole boy doing on food stamps?" Call it foolish self-pride, but I tossed the rest of the stamps in the trash and never recertified.

Nowadays, you pay with a food stamps debit card with nobody, except maybe for the cashier, knowing it's for food stamps. Still, it's sometimes easy to tell who's paying with food stamps.

For instance, the other day I was in the check-out line at the super market behind a young Latino couple and their four kids running wild and screaming at each other in Spanish. The guy had tattoos on his face and neck and the wife/girlfriend had purple streaks in her hair and a nose ring. They were taking their sweet-ass time unloading two full shopping carts of expensive meats and junk food. While I wondered what kind of cushy jobs they could be holding down, a black woman in line behind me muttered something about how they should thank God everyday for how great it is to live in America. When they were done, the guy swiped his card, but you could tell he was trying very hard to hide it. Yep, food stamps.

As the Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa used to joke, "Amereeka has been very goot to me."

“I'm Feisty!..sue me.”

Meant for the Needy..Not the Greedy.

Seems lately..They are one and the same.

Good thing for Karma.

In the end..It comes down to us all being judged.

Held accountable..and punished or rewarded.

For all we've done..or didn't do.

I taught at a mostly military school and most of the dependent kids qualified for free lunch and free transportation.

I lived off-campus after I moved out of the dorms while attending the UHM fulltime. My financial aid package included work study funds, so I worked part-time on campus to earn the money. I was too poor to go out to nightclubs or buy new clothes or eat out. I didn't buy some text books because I couldn't afford them. I'd go to the library and study the copy there. I applied for food stamps because I was struggling to cover my rent and utilities.

So, yes, I used food stamps for about 18 months until I graduated and found a fulltime job. I didn't feel ashamed when I stood in line with my booklet because the food I had in my cart were basic things like bread, rice, butter, milk, eggs, fresh vegetables, fruits, cereal, instant saimin, spam, vienna sausage, hamburger, soup, canned goods, coffee and hot dogs. I clipped coupons and used them to stretch the food stamps as much as I could. I watched market ads closely on Wednesdays and made my food stamps stretch beyond a month. The food stamps were there when I needed them.
