Aw Susan, I know how you feel. I wanted to learn how to spear dive. I found out that I didn't like killing fish that way. I'd rather use my pole. But spearing tako doesn't bother me. We learned to just take what you need and to the manini ones back to mature.
I love your columns. Take care.

You got the right attitude, Susan.

We can't deny the fact that we evolved as omnivores and must eat a variety of things to live a healthy life.

Urbanization has disconnected most of us from the source of our food, so we soon forget the full effect our existence has on the world around us, and what it truly takes to bring food to our table.

People will condemn hunting, yet think nothing of getting a hamburger from a drive thru. Realistically, there's almost no ethical difference between handing the clerk a debit card for a hot dog, or wielding a knife to skin and quarter a deer.

Fish, hunt, gather. What matters is the attitude. Some do it to feed themselves and their neighbors. Some do it for sport. Some just want to kill something.

Take what you need. Take care of the land and sea. And appreciate all that you have. Eventually we, too, shall be eaten by something else. It just how it is.

I don't want to be a part of the hypocrisy. When I grew up we killed the chickens, rabbits, beef and pork that we ate (you also eat less meat). We fished for and killed the fish, wana, opihi, crabs, he`e that we ate. That is the only way, something dies so that you may eat. Any other way to believe is juvenile and hypocritical. When you get that plate lunch, that fajita mixta, that tostada con camarones, the tacos pescado, be thankful that those creatures gave their life so that you might enjoy yours and reflect on your place in the universe. That is the only way, something dies so that you may eat, even plants.

Again the point is made.......humans take from the sea and the woods for "sport"......never thinking of the animal or mammal that they killed.......finally someone admits his personal hypocrisy.....but he isn't vegetarian now. He still eats the fish but thanks the universe & God for the bounties we have......

at least that is something I guess.....more people need to come to that revelation and only "take what they need" from the sea & woods and be thankful rather than thoughtless
It should be for sustenance not "sport"

Not only is this hypocrisy, but to implicitly condemn others for doing (hunting/killing) what you are unwilling and unable to do while enjoying the fruits of that endeavor, is outrageous.

The world would be a better place without such self-righteous malcontents.

Have always enjoyed your columns Susan. Good stuff.
What might help you is this: and I'm all for sustainable fishing - just remember that if these animals had the chance to eat you - if you were sunk to the bottom of the sea - crabs, lobsters, even fish would grind you in a second.
You're only doing to them what they would do to you - if they had the chance.
Aloha.

Susan please you are starting to sound like an animal worshiper!!! We are animals who eat other animals. Just like the rays that eat the clams, tunas that eat the squid, sharks that eat the fish. What we should not do is kill for killing. We eat what we kill and never take more then we eat. Or are you somehow suggesting that all animals are vegans? We are part of the cycle of life and always will be.
