Ma has violated human rights of his political enemies. Former Taiwan President Chen Shui Bian was locked up by Ma for more than 200 days without bail. Many others are also in jail on trump up charges. The demonstrations are for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Taiwan.

I think you need to lighten up. First of all, a president cannot "lock" somebody up. The problem with you people is you get waaay too carried away by these politics that you cannot see what is the truth and believe in absolute stupidity.

Secondly, having no freedom of the press in Taiwan? Give me a break! They have paparatzi worse than those over here in the US.

Has nothing to do with our state. Actually costs us money having him here. Go live your life intelligently and stop wasting your energy for those people who has brainwashed you.:)

In case you don't know, Ma is a graduate of Harvard Law School. He currently has dozens of lawsuit against major medias and political opponents in Taiwan. He is suing the prosecutor who investigated his personal use of public fund. The prosecutor has lost his job due to this.
Ma fist maintained the Special Fund was public fund and he never used it for personal use. When confronted with evidence by the prosecution, he immediately changed his stance and maintain that the special fund was his personal fund and therefore was deposited into his wife's account. The court found him not guilty by explaining that he has spent his own money for charity, so those special funds were used to replenish his personal expenses. This can only happen in a Authoritarian Chinese controlled government

Oh and I forgot to mention that his bookkeeper was found guilty of depositing all Government Special funds into Ma's wife's account. The poor little bookkeeper was sentenced to two years in jail for following Ma's order. This is Justice Chinese Style.

The native people of Taiwan are Austronesians, very closely related to people of the Pacific Islands like New Zealand, Hawaii, and Tahiti.

1. Who hasn't sued media for some sort of "defamation" or something to that effect? If you stop people from being able to take legal action then you are pretty much going against what you are fighting for in the first place which is democracy. Take it in with the good and the bad.

2. Politicians will always be politicians, I am not defending him because I do not even know him. If he did do it and got "convicted" of it... Then he should be impeached! No questions about it. But even John Edwards a presidential candidate admitted to something like that and paid back the money. Unfortunatelly, last time I checked, it was the last president who admitted to embezzling and stealing Millions of dollars. I know what you will say next... this is all politically motivated... perhaps this is true, but the last President had 2 full terms... and all these charges of corruption was actually found out in the middle of his term. If it was just a political attack, the opposition wouldnt have won in a LANDSLIDE during the last election. There will always be corruption in Gov't even here in the US. It's just a matter of how "selfish" you are.

Now something against him, the problem with Ma is his stance on having closer relations with China. He has to be VERY careful about where he is going with it. Taiwan is a democratic country. The closer he tries to get to China, the more China will insist on having them back. He says it is just economic ties, but if he makes Taiwan dependent on the Chinese economy, you are as good as theirs.

For a Local, you seem to be very informed about Taiwan Politics.

Only some of the information you got may be a little distorted. The Former president Chen Shui Bian never admitted guilt on any of the trump up charges. He is being held without bail for more than 200 days. The first judge assigned to his case, who unknowingly released him on bail for a brief time last year, was immediately taken off the case and a new judge assigned. The new judge followed Ma's orders to a T.

In 2004, While Former Taiwanese President Chen Shui Bian was running for reelection, he was hit by an assassin's bullet. The bullet went through the windshield of an American Jeep, went through his jacket and layers of clothing glazed his stomach leaving a 6 inch long wound and stopped on the other side of the jacket. The gunman was later found dead in the water, the gun was traced to Ma's Chinese Kuo Ming Tang Party. A top retired Chinese KMT party Military General had purchased the illegal gun and gave it to his wife's brother. Ironically, no one was charged. Not only that, Ma's Chinese Party blame Chen for staging the shooting himself.
