The homeless (hopeless) must find another area. Homeless problems can be solved but there is no money to be made. Leave Kaena Point alone or train the homeless to be stewards of Kaena Point and other isolated areas and make them live in grass huts and malama aina and be usefull to our over taxed population. By taking care of our land by not putting up blue tops and shanty type structures. No hon...Hawaiians are famous for trashing the land. Ask park workers. Stop dreaming your nonsense. If what you say could happen, it would have long ago.

My earlier years in the 1980's my buddies and I would would watch the sun's rays touch Kaena like fingers as if it was to lift the spirits of the dead off the point into heaven. We'd camp, fish, gaze at the stars and respectfully leave offerings of thanks for safe passage and cleaned up before we departed from the reserve. I hope and trust that the next generation would understand the immense value of that land reserve, and maintain responsibility and respect the sacredity of Kaena. It's a wonderful place to visit. Malama Pono o Kaena Just to be on the safe side, you should know that the spirits "take off" for the other worlds from just about any promontory. Your rituals are lovely and romantic, and Kaena is beautiful, but it's hardly the be all and end all of Hawaiian lore.

I wish hawaiians would respect the land more. Their trashing of kaena is simply terrible.

Hasn't anybody learned yet? Take a look at the public camp areas and see what havoc people wreak on the land. So much disrespect. The bathrooms are trashed, literally. Graffiti everywhere, torn off doors to restroom stalls, deliberately broken toilets, sinks, plumbing, toilet paper bombs on the walls and ceilings, feces smeared on the walls, all kinds of trash on the grounds, and the continuing use of illegal drugs, which brings in more people who just don't give a darn. We cannot allow more destruction to our precious land. Leave Kaena alone. Find ways to protect it even further and impose more severe fines/penalties to those who abuse it. I came here in 1981 and have seen this land become more and more abused as the years go by. I understand the Hawaiians desire to use the area for cultural practices. There has to be a happy medium for all. Unfortunately, there's always some jerk or jerks that screw it up for everyone else. Charging $120 is cuckoo. Put the heads together and really think about what's important here. Hiring an Ambassador is a good idea. More than 1 is even better. It would also be worth it to have some type of law enforcement in place. Just a few officers in place who can keep an eye on things. If cultural access is permitted, the odds of having destructive things take place is really small. Cultural groups highly respect the land and actually promote the well being of the area. How about guided tours of very small groups. Very visible strict boundaries also. Haleakala has strict access. There are areas where it is prohibited to access. Signs are posted. There is always a solution. Just need to work on it.

Options:
- Privatize access to Kaena. Charge fees. Set up nice campgrounds with great amenities and a reservation system.
- Build a road around the point. Used to be you could drive around if you took it slow and careful. Nice drive. Make it a tollroad to raise revenue by short cutting access.
- Sell about 20% of the less sensitive land for development but require 80% to remain wild and protected and that the cost of maintenance be provided in perpetuity by the sale proceeds.
- Put up a world class aquarium and draw visitors to pay money. Use the money to protect and maintain the area. Residents get in no charge.
Kaena is a nice area and resource. It's being completely trashed now. Fishermen, ATV riders, truck boys and illegal campers have wrecked the place. Obviously the so called "cultural practitioners" are just all talk. So, put it in the hands of folks with a vested interest - money! Then everyone can enjoy the area and assure it is preserved for generations yet to come.

We also used to go there a lot too, same thing, camp, fish, swim, cruise by the lighthouse...it was real nice, hardly anyone there...and access was wide open on both ends, even drove in a Toyota Corolla from the Waianae side couple of times. I walked in about a year ago and all I have to say is that the area has more trash and people as a "protected" area than it was before...only the large trash like the couple of burned out cars are now gone.

Kaena Point is a greast spot for a golf course. Just think, ther State can sell the land to some rich developer, thay can dredge the area for a harbor, put up multi-million dollar condos and a fabulous golf course, higher locals from both North Shore and the West Side, and put in a paved walking path complete with two parking stalls for the locals (you know, to provide access to the beach). Its a win win for everyone! Come on Linda, sell the land!

Yup, I agree thats not the only departure point, different tribals different stories. If you have not experienced the Ho'oponopono (healing) of Kaena then you cannot understand Kupuna's story.
