Crossroads at Kaena - News

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

In the old days, Kaena Point was so remote, only the hardy ventured that far. But these days, the rugged western flank of Oahu lures hikers from across the globe and hot-rodders who roar over its dunes.

Simple, this one. Limit vehicular access. Limit it stringently. Tutu Honua will take care the rest of it herself. Plenty of other places for the fat-wheelers to tear up that aren't ecologically sensitive (cane/pine land). Let the noise, fumes, soil erosion and attitude go somewhere else.

Hawaii - kingdom of scofflaws.

Check out Kaena Point YouTube clips of offroading Ainokea thugs at play devastating the aina almost beyond belief. The green bottle sucking idiots have damaged the land to an extent this article does not even begin to suggest. The huge pickup trucks, SUVs, and ATVs should be completely banned from the entire area wrapping around the point, using armed guards with arrest powers and impenetrable gates to keep the fools out. The trucks and SUVs are almost all of them illegally lifted, tinted, unmuffled, with too large protruding tires and should be subject to seizure on sight by HPD. There are also vicious dogs (pit bulls aplenty) along for the ride, and these may be allowed to run off leash. The abusers of Kaena Point need to be treated as the criminals that they are and crushed.

Good for Denis Park to do that. Kudos to you! Native traditional practices trump everything else. They aren't going to Kaena Pt to patry, shoot at birds and to spray grafitti. It looks like the state is trying to raise extra revenue. But you can't charge for things people have done for generations for free.

Unlike Ecuador and the Gallapogas Islands we have allowed developers to ruin the Hawaiian Islands, we have invasive plants, birds, animals and humans ruining this remote country.

We cannot continue, the polluting and ruination must stop, Kaena must be walled in and kept for nature one way or another.

It's not visitors who need to be educated on appropriate behavior, it's the huge, silly-looking trucks with the idiots willing to ruin Kaena Point for their kicks that need to be barred. That's a no-brainer. Do that and then go from there.

auwe Times have taken its toll on our hawai'i nei and our peoples. The old practices should be applied to modern day. Those of you that know old ways should teach and guide. In the modern day we watch as our islands are desecrated and abused beyond recognition and it saddens us. We must look beyond our eyes and see in the heart of change and participate with that understanding. In this way, we pass on to our children the need to understand and seek the way. Whatever your choice may be, it will teach you a truth. Do not despair at what your eyes see. Know that we are witnessing and we are awake! imua

Why don't we biuld a beautiful 2 lane road around this scenic part of the island. It would serve 2 purposes. First and foremost it would serve as a alternate route for Oahu's west coast residence who sometimes get locked in when a accident close them off. Second it would be accessible for law enforcement to patrol this remote area. As it is now we don't know who is in that area and what they are doing. I have seen people shooting guns, drinking, and tearing up the aina with no control and policing. Thats where the problem is

As a part Hawaiian I am kind of glad for people wanting to protect the Kaena Coastline but as in the past I am sure once they (the state) steps in things will change big time. There are somethings in Hawaii that have been changed and it has not been to the benefit of the populace. But it has benefited the tourists, as well as the state coffers. I think the state should put people who utilize the area like the fishermen and women as well as the hikers in charge of Kaena Point. That way they will make sure it stays as pristine as it should be. Ban off road bikes as well as 3 wheelers, maybe the state should have a place they can do their off road biking etc. and charge them for it. Since they can be destructive make them pay for it, at another location. Mayne Hawaii Kai or Aina Haina, Manoa or Nuuanu would also be good choices.

REPLY: Because the WAIANAE AREA has been developed enough!! It is the ONLY UNTOUCHED COASTLINE on OAHU!! Leave that area alone, let the fishermen(and women) and the hikers take stewardship over it, give them arresting capabilities so they can do something when there are law breakers. And as to WHAT people are doing there is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!! As long as they are not dealing drugs or running a drug lab there WHAT IS THE PROBLEM W/LEAVING IT ALONE?? Development HAS GOT TO STOP, especially in that area.

Strange quote from Summer Nemeth. She doesn't want permanent structures but none are proposed in the article, so why quote her?

The point is one of the last intact coastal areas of Oahu. The 'road' to it looks like the US Army has driven tanks over it and fired explosives. The fishermen come to fish and they should continue to do.

But no one and no user has a right to continue to destroy Kaena.

Kaena is not the land of Ainokea.

Bet you haven't been out there in a zillion years. If it WAS like the old days, I'd say hands off. But it's become a place where partying isn't just taking place, it's taking over. Fishing respectfully, hiking and communing with the land is great, but there's too many people there for other reasons. Enormmous 4 wheeled vehicles, ATVs, drunkers and unrestrained dogs make the place dangerous on weekends, and there's nobody to clean up the trash afterwards. I feel sorry for the new "ambassadors" but it's time that we get quality state parks with protection like other places. You need to know who's going in there, and to hold them responsible if they're trashing it.

If you want it "left alone" you need to get someone besides fishermen to get rid of those who are trashing the place. People fishing out there need to BE LEFT ALONE also, not forced to be agents of the law. My family and I don't enjoy going out there anymore, at least not on weekends. It's getting "developed" by people who are destroying what's beautiful about it in the name of "recreation". Fighters, drinkers, racers, squatters and druggies - they all have to go. Otherwise those who love the aina there will have no peace.

Close it off at the paved road ending. Stop the jeeps etc that tear up the place and make everyone walk in from the road end parking areas.
I have seen jeeps all the way out almost to the end and they tear up the vegetation.etc.
My family has walked in and spent the day. Its beautiful and should be preserved.

It is NOT like this is a new concern. Kaena point has been a place beyond control of 'the authorities' for a long time. Control access of lifted 'Monster trucks'? Are you KIDDING me ? The HPD can't be bothered to contol them on the streets (where they do not belong and are not legallay using). Heck, I see a mini-van driving around DOWNTOWN HONOLULU with homemade "Kingdom of Hawaii" plates while at the same time I've been pulled over and cited for an expired safety check.

Perhaps when we have ONE set of rules for everyone thing could change, but as it is now, if you are a big scowling moke with a mean dog you are above the law in Hawaii. Besides, if there were any changes out there the 'improvements' would be trashed within a month and the additional visitor traffic would only serve to deliver a fresh crop of rental cars to the smash&grab crews. When was the last time any of you parked out there at the access areas ? The ground is covered with broken auto glass. Yeah, it's all Whitey's fault.

Daily Horoscope for February 12

Sagittarius

The day may start out on a high note, but sometime this afternoon you may be feeling uneasy. Not to worry, it's just the beginning of your lunar low cycle, which may drain your energy. This is just Nature's way of telling you to slow down and recharge your spiritual batteries. You may want to schedule time for a long bubble bath or a massage from your partner this evening.
