Wasn't Sternisha critical of Churnovic doing this? Why would Soliman go and do the same thing and expect nothing to be said?

Is it legal for anyone to use city money to attend a political fundraiser? Doesn't sound right.

Perhaps instead of thinking the worst, you might recognize that even politicians needs to lobby other politicians in higher office for resources that benefit the community!! If a local government has an elected official that does not engage in politics then they are ineffective for the taxpayers!

Just curious, were fund raisers for both political parties attended or just one? It would appear that there are better ways to represent the city with elected officials than attending fund raisers on the city's dime. After all what happens if the other candidate wins at the next election?

Boys and Girls, I dove into Illinois law at lunch.

Before anybody asks, I ain't a lawyer. I'm making no accusations. I'm just cutting and pasting what I read on the General Assembly's website.

(10 ILCS 5/9‑25.1)
Sec. 9‑25.1. Election interference.

(a) As used in this Section, "public funds" means any funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly or by any political subdivision of the State of Illinois.

(b) No public funds shall be used to urge any elector to vote for or against any candidate or proposition, or be appropriated for political or campaign purposes to any candidate or political organization. This Section shall not prohibit the use of public funds for dissemination of factual information relative to any proposition appearing on an election ballot, or for dissemination of information and arguments published and distributed under law in connection with a proposition to amend the Constitution of the State of Illinois.

(c) The first time any person violates any provision of this Section, that person shall be guilty of a Class B misdemeanor. Upon the second or any subsequent violation of any provision of this Section, the person violating any provision of this Section shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.

(Source: P.A. 87‑1052.)

Class B misdemeanors are punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1500.

The mayor can lobby higher politicians all he wants, BUT NOT with the City funds. He can go to all the political fund raisers he wants as long as he donates his own money. HE SHOULD PAY THAT MONEY BACK TO THE CITY OF CREST HILL.

What he did was dead wrong. I hope he understands this and never uses tax money again for political fundraisers.

Bet he has to pay back the funds, The City Atty knew at the meeting that it was unlawful and didn't want the Mayor to look bad in the meeting-
So watch at the next meeting, the Mayor will say
" I make a mistake for that I'm sorry, and will repay the funds"

In my book that shows his bold attitude towards being Mayor- its goes much deeper- our City is hurting for funds like every other City & but he gives the City Manger a big pay raise to retain him- Where could John Tommy go?
The Police gets a fat raise- and now we two less officers on the street- best of all they get to Monday- Friday DAYS-- why can't they work second shift & weekends?

The city council meets tomorrow night. Here's my prediction.

Solimon will announce that he's given the money back, explain that he didn't know the rules, and is really sorry that he embarrassed the city and himself.

The city attorney will say Solimon didn't do anything wrong because Solimon's intention was to represent the city's interest.

One of the mayor's allies will wax and wane over how Solimon is an honest man who made an honest mistake. There's no need for any further persecution because "he's paid a heavy price already."

At that point, Mrs. iScooter will throw a brick at my new plasma television, forcing me to spend the rest of the night wondering how I can get her action classified as an act of vandalism under our extended service warranty.

Did you forget he said he was also going to another fundraiser that Thursday after the meeting - even after it was questioned. Just poor judgment.
I think he should be fined by the State ..

No, I didn't know that he went to another fundraiser?
