Just when it seemed Phil Mickelson was about to pounce on the opportunity being afforded him to become the World's # 1 Golfer for the first time in his career based on Woods being inactive to 8 months...
A Funny thing happened at Bay Hill Yesterday... A Poor finish at the Arnold Palmer invitational by Woods would surely mean that Phil Mickelson would have (with a win or a very high finish say like a top 3) in Houston this week shown up at Augusta National as the Number 1 Player in the World Golf Rankings in 2 weeks...
The updated World Golf Rankings now show:
1> Tiger- 10.09
2> Phil- 8.51
Going into this week's Shell Houston Open.
This is still far from over as a Victory by Phil in the Masters would still probably do the trick regardless of how he plays this week... And a Victory this week in Houston would bring him to not even needing a Victory at the Masters to Overtake Woods at the Top Spot in Golf... He would simply need to finish 2-4 slots higher than Tiger should Phil Win this Week...
This is going to be fun to watch as Phil was as close as he ever has been to Tiger in World Golf Ranking Points coming into Bay Hill, but it appears just as it was within Phil's Clutches, Tiger has decided to make him work a little harder for it...
So the question is... Will Phil Mickelson EVER overtake Tiger Woods in the World Golf Rankings as World # 1 barring another injury by Woods?
