Not much contest in schools election

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

Board member Bryan O. Steward didn't make the ballot. The Columbus school-board race -- a crowded battleground just 10 years ago -- now lacks enough candidates for the November ballot to fill all the open seats.

So many of the school board seats in Ohio are like City Council Seats i.e., just another way to enter the political scene and go on to higher and grander positions as soon as possible. Under this system, Columbus Schools alone is the size of a large corporation (53000 students) and merits professional management and government. This we do not have and it is obvious. People scream equality of everything in all aspects so maybe it is time to turn all education over to the state and start over. Nothing is getting better except the teacher's salaries and benefits. Our state universities should be prohibited from competing with the private schools and have one objective, education of students.

Perhaps there are so few candidates due to the fact that the Columbus Public School system is such a dismal failure. Throwing more money at it never helps. The students (most of them) don't care, the parents don't care, and a large percentage of the teachers don't care anymore either. It's a lose-lose situation. One example of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result each time. Maybe it's time the Columbus School System tried something different?? What they've been doing for the past 30 years isn't working, and in fact is making it worse.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Virgo

Someone is being headstrong and wilful, and absolutely determined to do what they want. Mercury is retrograde and it's a Full Moon in Cancer with a lunar eclipse all happening tonight! This could lead to some heated discussions and possibly even rows, as you argue the toss back and forth. It might be best to accept that there's very little possibility of reaching an agreement rather than to get locked in a stubborn battle of wills. Besides, you don't want anything to spoil what promises to be a very enjoyable New Year's Eve. Have fun!
