I live in Holcomb and can tell you what you need to know. It is a very small town of only around 1500, but it is only 8 miles from Grenada which is a much larger town. They have the best public schools in Mississippi. They have nice places to eat, shop, etc. There is a super Walmart there and a very nice lake for recreation. They have a good Medical Center. I cannot tell you annual income but you can probably call the Chamber of Commerce to find out that info. But as far as Holcomb goes, There is a post office, two convenience stores, cafe, country store, car lot, tractor dealer and fire station and 2 churches. But like I said being only 8 miles from a large town is convenient and it is nice to get away from the noise and the rat race. It is very quiet here and the kind of place where the kids still play in the street and people still leave their doors unlocked. You can look up Holcomb,Ms on the Internet and see the history of the town. It is quiet interesting. Best of luck. I hope this will help. By the way, we do not eat crocodiles for breakfast, we usually have possum!!!!

Greenwood MS " The cotten Capital" is about 20 miles from Holcomb. But I do lock my doors to to all the crystal metheads and crackheads in Holcomb.
|
||||
You have Holcomb and Greenwood mixed up. I do not know of any metheads in holcomb, but if there are some, I guess you must know. You can turn on the local news and hear all about the problems in Greenwood, but I do not believe I have ever heard of anything like that in Holcomb. |

Grenada is 10 minutes away from Holcomb and has great schools. Holcomb is diverse, half and half about, so you will be great. Good town, good people very family oriented. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!! |

I lived in Greenwood Mississippi from 1964 thru 1969. I was a teenager but I was very aware of the problems of the Delta. It is a backward, poor state that will remain that way as the people will NEVER allow progression with the rest of the country due to their inability to let go of their precious cotton fields. They will forever live in the past and "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
Gone for good, Thanks be to God!" |

I hope you guys really, really, reconsider. The job opportunities there are terrible. Holcomb is a very, very small and economically challenged town to say the least. You will be moving from Hollywood to the backwoods of whatever country you could possibly think of. I moved away from the Grenada/Holcombe area about ten years ago and I wont even go back to visit and if you read the news there lately there have a serial killer on the loose. Move SOmEWHERE ELSE, TRUST ME!!!!!!!!!!

"There is no place like home". My husband and I both were born and raised in the Mississippi Delta. We have been in Dallas, Texas for over 20 years now and are the parents of adult children. Our hearts and souls will forever be rooted in Mississippi. Our families and friends are there and we visit often. But I do not regret making a better life for my children by bringing them to a city, such as Dallas. The schools,job opportunities,diversity.....ev erything you want! I love Dallas because of the southern climate and hospitality. Mississippi will always be "home" for me, for us. I recently enjoyed a 2 week vacation back home with my parents. But I have no plans to move back.

Unless you have lived in the Mississippi Delta you have no idea what it's like. You can't tell what a place is like by act scores. That's just plain stupid and I would venture there are a lot more crack heads in Mitchell IL,pensacola FL,Garland TX,or Los Angeles CA. The delta has problems due to poverty caused by people not looking for work elsewhere when their jobs played out decades ago due to the modernization of farming techniques. The delta population is made up of farmers and services that support the farms. There is very little industry. The delta is normally a very quiet place outside the cities. The skies are clear at night and stars are seen from horizon to horizon. There is very little air pollution and the sounds of insects are about all you will hear at night. If you don't like hunting,fishing,stargazing,or the peace you find in a rural environment stay where you are. How do I know this? I grew up there in the middle of the struggle in the 50's,60's and 70's. If you are looking for somewhere to get a hand out go somewhere else.

I grew up in the Miss. Delta...it was a great place to be from...people are wonderful...if you grow up there...depending on what you are looking for would be the driving force as to whether you would ever be happy in that area. The entire area is economically depressed, culturally deprived, educationally deprived, it will never progress...the mentality is still the same towards blacks, northerners and foreigners as it was 60 years ago. If you desire to live in a rural setting where the best place to shop is Wal_mart and you don't mind driving to the nearest city, which is Memphis Tennessee, it is hot in the summer, cold and ugly in the winter and you like to fish and hunt and don't want much diversity, then this may well be the place for you. People who live there probably love it...just depends on what you want. Hopefully you will not be taking children there...state of Miss. ranks last in the nation for education and first for poverty...is there a relationship??

Hello, I was thinking of moving myself. In need of a small town atmosphere. Did you move there? If so, do you have contact info because I would much rather speak or email someone in private. thanks. I also live Cleveland and just can't take the cold any longer. |
