There are sharks in HH. Last Summer we went shark fishing off the shore.(we used squid for bate) After 30 min we caught a 3 foot blacktip, about an hour and a half later at about 8:30 roughly the fishing pole bent a whole 90 degrees, whatever we had hook was atleast 6 feet, the shark was so powerful it snapped the line within 30 seconds of hooking it. The truth is there are sharks in HHI. We go every summer and always worry but we never have had ecounters other than fishing. Your biggest concern should really be jellyfish or stingrays.

My family owns a beach house down there and we drove around on jetski's and fell off a lot of times and no sharks or anything in sight. Only a few dolphins from time to time. But they are harmless.

My family and I have been going to hilton head for about six years now (at the very end of July). A guy caught a sting ray standing on the beach once but he cast pretty far out. I have a big fear of sharks but The only shark I have ever seen in HHI in one the size of a small fish and those you see on fishing boats WAY out in the ocean. If you go to Hilton Head then that's awesome because it's wonderful. Don't be scared. Oh and jellyfish...I got stung last year...I had forgotten about it by dinner that evening... the saltwater calmed the itch and irritation.

Even though this happened a couple of years ago this scares still scares me. I remember about two years ago when I was swimming and a about 2 feet long pops out of the water 10 feet away from. Scared the shit out of me!

Everyone needs to be VERY concerned with Sting Rays, shuffle your feet!!! I live in HHI and my husband was stung, it was HORRIBLE! He was stung in May and the hole has just closed in.(Sept) He was on antibiotics for weeks because of the infection due to the venom. I can't imagine a child dealing with that kind of pain!

We r on vacation now. South forest beach. We always catch sharks and sting rays when fishing right off the beach behind the house. Come here almost every year and always see the sting rays. Igor has pushed alot of things further in this year. A horseshoe crab And jellyfish was on shore last night and another jelly tonight. I never go further than waist deep anymore and never let my kids get past their waists in it and always wear swim shoes. The jellyfish are bad this time too.

My husband was stung by the sting ray in less than a foot deep of water as he was walking out of the water. We ordered this stuff "Squish the Fish" and unless it's a SEVERE jelly fish sting, a couple of sprays of it will take all the pain and itch away immediately, at least it has for us. But there is nothing that makes a sting ray wound feel better. REALLY HOT water helps, but it is still a LONG recovery. Shoes wouldn't have mattered with his sting, the way most of the sting ray stings happen is, they are stepped on the the auto reflex of the ray is for the tail/barb to flip around and sting the top of the victim. The best way to avoid them is shuffle your feet.

i went to my dads in hilton head island july 22-the 1st.i was SO scared to get stung by a jelly fish but thankgod i didnt! my dads been swiming 1000's of times and has never been stung, his girlfriend was not so fortunate.i guess you just have to take that chance when you enter the ocean.as for sharks i wouldnt worry so much.people die more in car wrecks than shark attacks.i didnt see not one shark while i was there,im pretty sure they were there but they didnt bother anybody.were entering there enviornment so we have to take percautions and "chances".

Just left Hilton Head as was very disappointed that we were not able to truly enjoy the beach. Within 20 min of arriving at the water my son was stung by a jelly fish on both legs. While sitting with him, we continued to watch multiple children running from the water screaming. The lifeguard told us that they were very bad right now, so BEWARE.

Vacationed at the Shorewood complex at Hilton Head near Coligny Circle this past August 2011. I witnessed a man shore fishing from my fifth floor ocean side balcony. It was awsome and scarey because I watched him pull in sharks. One was every bit as big as the man. He caught the little fish that come close to shore first and used them as bait. I noticed the little fish were a very shiny silver in the sunlight as they would zip in and out of the water. Later in the day I saw a pretty young woman with shiny body piercing in her naval and a pink bikini. I was very worried about her. I love the beach but don't want to go out in the water much.

john wrote: <quoted text>No problem. while up in the air just don't look down becuase you have a great view of what's underneath the water. I've seen over 6' sharks swimming less than 100 yards off shore. enjoy! We saw a shark around 6 foot long while there the last week of June. It was around 25 feet out. I got several people out of the water before the lifeguard cleared the water. We noticed a large school of fish jumping and then we saw it and watched it for a good distance before it disappeared.

Every year my family and I go to HHI in sea pines and there's always jellyfish warnings but it's usually not that bad so you really don't have to worry about them if you go in early August. I have never encountered a stingray on the beach when I wasn't fishing so I wouldn't worry about them too much but I would still be causious.

There are more sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, etc. etc. in and around those beaches than most people realize.
I caught a 4 1/2' shark there last summer. Pulled it right up on the beach.
You can go out there at daylight and fish until dark and you'll catch shark after shark after shark. Most of them will be about 14-18" long, but don't be fooled - there are BIG ones right off the beach.
