The Post and Courier has recently turned over internet log-in and internet provider log in detailed records to attorneys in Charleston, SC.
Attorney Andy Savage (D) of Charleston has taken the information acquired from Post and Courier staff and in furtherance has also issued subpoenas on internet email providers in attempts to uncover the names, email account information, and perhaps even actual emails from thos accounts belonging to anonymous commenters on stories posted on the Post and Courier's internet website. Many of these anonymous users of the website have, in part, been outspoken critics of democrats holding elected office and certain SC Judges over the way they have handled court cases.
Over the years, Attorney Andy Savage has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the re-election campaigns of democratic politicians; including Charleston Mayor Joe Riley who has been highly criticized by dozens of these anonymous posters.
Many of the posters on the website are members of the law enforcement community, lawyers, politicians, government workers and the like who have been afforded the ability to post comments on the newspaper's website without disclosing their true identity. Now, Andy Savage wants to learn who they are. Hence, he appears to be on a witch hunt for those who have been the targets of the above mentioned criticizism. Who is he to provide these names to once he finds out their true identity? Who will they share it with? To those who the criticism and insults were directed so they can possibly retaliate?
This one is going to be a can of worms. I expect the subpoenaed information will be abused, and it's my opinion that Attorney Andy Savage is possibly - and alledgedly - abusing his subpoena powers for deceptive motives under the gist of something else.
