Mr. Shupe, you are suggesting even more ways for people to be unkind to each other. Compassion and understanding would be a preferable path to choose.

No, Mr Shupe is merely suggesting ways that us legitiment bus riders can use the bus stop benches. Pat, you must not be a bus rider. If you were you would know the big problem this is. I am tired of standing while some druggie is stretched out on the bench and his stench surrounds the area. I would rather have 'toadstool' type places to sit. But I am sure the bums would qauickly find ways around that (like laying boards over them). Bus riders have paid hard earned money and we absolutely deserve no less than clean safe bus stops. Do you hear us City council? You will if we start picketing in front of Honolulu Hale.

Ethanol, anyone? If it takes a the energy provided by a gallon of fossil fuel to produce a gallon of enthanol, will someone who's not in the corn or sugar business please tell me why I should pump this stuff into my gas tank, and have to pay a buck to buy an ear of corn?

Benches? MAke them coin operable and be done with it. Half a buck gets a 30 minute rest for a twenty inch butt. When time elapses, seat is spring activated and shoots sitter off onto the street.

re: drivers license renewal. If my memory serves me correctly the reason given for discontinuining the mailing of reminders was that it was becoming too expensive. Ditto on the safety inspection renewals. So they saved some money and gave raises to the people who used to mail out the reminders. The people are still there but they just don't mail reminders any longer.

Sugar cane is a terrible crop - it's very "thirsty." It requries lots of sunlilght and heat, but it also requires a LOT of water. That's a bad combo for an Island that has to keep an eye on its water usage.

If ethanol from sugar cane is so great, why have the Hawaii cane field owners not jumped on the band wagon??? It's not worth the expense. I have a better idea... Junk the stupid ethanol thing and let them raise corn to eat. Adding ethanol was a nice feel good idea that failed to pan out... point of FACT, it has made things worse. Ruined engines, less effecient cars, high gas prices. Get rid of ethanol ASAP.

Hehe sounds like Mr Meeker missed the expiration date of his driver's license. Why blame yourself when you can blame the government?

Alternative designs in benches will truly be the most economical and prudient solution to dealing with the homeless problem at the bus stops. In the long run, it will solve the issue about campers at the stops.

Your driver's license always expires on your birthday, how can you forget that?

if mr. meeker can remember his date of birth, that is where he will find when his license will expire. not hard.

Meekers letter does not hold water just take responsibility. Most of us are adults and I for one would rather our esteemed money grubbing goverment would stay as much out of my business as possible and I definately dont want to pay extra taxes cause Mr Meeker and his wife dont know how to keep track of their own licsenses. I cant even believe this guy would even write this letter and I am sure he is not a lawyer either hahahahahaha what a joke. He wants us as a society to pay to remind him to get his licsense is he for real hahahaha

Too many are taking advantage of these public spaces. I was waiting for a bus and was sexually harassed by passing cars and 3 drunks waiting for the same bus. I dread taking the bus even during the day.

Stan,
I believe Kauai's Gay and Robinson Sugar Company is constructing an ethanol production facility. It's been a while since I've read any updates or progress reports...

I'll say it again a second time, I don't see anything wrong with people lying down at bus stops while waiting for a bus to relieve their sore backs - as long as they are willing to get up and anyone else waiting for the bus to sit down. It's called common courtesy. Why go through so much trouble to redesign bus benches and inconvenience some legitimate bus riders waiting for the bus? Sometimes one has to wait a whole hour. Wouldn't it be nice to rest while waiting when you are the only one at the stop?
On the other hand, if you insist on making the benches "sittable" only, at least provide back supports. There are numerous people out there with bad backs!
