The University of Hawaii faculty union says its representatives and management will meet with a federal mediator Wednesday after members voted overwhelmingly to reject a contract offer that called for a 5 percent pay cut and other concessions to help UH deal with budget cuts.

The University must live within the budget allowed them. NO MO FUNDS!! If the University needs more funds, raise tuitions but no new taxes. Hawaii and the University, live within your means! We have to!

The UH faculty who voted for the contract are to be commended for their economic smarts and social responsibility.

The faculty who peevishly and irresponsibly voted against the contract are not fit to serve. They embarass themselves and the university.

Why doesn't MRC and her cronies lead by example and take larger pay cuts (graduated) since they make too much! While I'm at it, why don't they cut Admin too since there are too many Admin types doing nothing to bring in grant monies or teach actual courses. They like to talk a good talk yet expect the faculty to take the biggest hit. That is NOT leading by example. Maybe if Admin starts to take graduated cuts and furlough THEIR staff first (like why does the UH CC system have so many chancellors?! ONE is good enough! especially during these "tough economic times" as MRC likes to say!).

So if MRC wants to talk about doing what is best for the students, do more than just take a 6% cut!!! Why should UHPA give up their retrenchment clause which they have had for about 30 years when Admin is protected?! Just shows how they are selfish and looking out for themselves only!! Do they care about the students?!! obviously NO.

That is why the membership voted NO MRC. Wake up you clueless mainlander!

I love the UH, they really got balls to reject Lingle's offer. Actually there is a big surplus that Lingle is hiding or putting into pockets. Everyone knows Lingle is a liar and the worst governor we ever had. I salute the professors at the U.H.

Lots of wasted resources and mismanagement of facilities in the UH system. We could probably save tens of millions with better planning and controlling contractor cost overruns and overpriced bidding. The wasteful things I see everyday at work from audio visual installations to AC duct work are truly mind boggling. Plus, lots of excess padding in admin to say the least...

5% is too low they should take a 25% pay cut. I bet they cannot work a day in construction. Introduce them to the real world. Spoiled academic monkeys, they are paid double what they are worth.

The vote wasn't about the money. If the offer was a 5% cut via furloughs, leaving everything else in the contract intact, it would have passed with flying colors even though it would have placed as the second-most poorly paid faculty among our peer institutions (in contrast, Greenwood makes far above what presidents at our peer institutions make).

The administration is using the budget crisis as an excuse to try and change provisions that have been in the contract for decades. Provisions that are the bedrock, the foundation of the contract. With the new language whole programs could be cut just based on the whims of the administration, rather than a thorough analysis, potentially leaving majors stranded. Not to mention that the retrenchment would be highly politicized, the antipathy of academe in general.

With her snippy little e-mail last night, it is clear MRC Greenwood is tone deaf when it comes to negotiations. It's pathetic that UH ended up with this overfed, ethically challenged fat-cat as it's leader.

Musto is only for himself and not for the students. What kind of professor is he when he threats his union to strike against the university if he doesn't get his way. He should go back to the mainland where he belongs. The state and the university don't need this type of shelfish leadership.

lol! Sorry. Nothing in a contract is "bedrock" or a "foundation." Contracts have a being date, end date and conditions all parties need to meet during its life. That's it. You have no further "entitlements" after its self life.

Besides, the world is changing. You need to change along with it. Or are you saying what you're teaching matches your "bedrock" philosophy? And here I thought universities were institutions of higher learning.

"Overfed, ethically challenged fat-cat" sure seems like a poor work environment. Why don't you find a job at a university where you are appreciated by a slim, ethical, semi-fat-cat? Surely, there must be one school out there that will properly reward you for your work, experience, and insight.

I paid for my daughters 4 years @ UH. No freebies or handouts.
So perhaps they should consider raising the tuition at the University.
But suggesting to raise my taxes to pay for your sorry okoles, I don't think so!
Feel free to go on strike, zero affect on me and my family.
BTW, why don't you consider being a football coach, I understand they get paid over a million per year, travel across the country and only work part of the year.

The UH faculty are paid below their peers. There is no COLA or locality pay adjustments. The UH administrators are paid at levels similar to or higher than their peers. In event they should return to faculty status, their pay would also be higher than those in the college they are tenured. President Greenwood makes over $35,000.00 per month. What value does she brings to UH system to deserve such pay. While we charge students tuition to learn, we are happily paying many of such administrators $20,000.00 or more per month to learn about our culture, how things get done in Hawaii, how to manage, how to think out of the box and how to would like an ohana in an island setting. The administration personnel bloated over 277% in the past 8 years. They do not teach, do not perform research and do not provide direct services to the community. Lastly, the UH and the state needs to streamline programs and limit the growth of programs that require new staff e.g. pharmacy, etc. We cannot even take care of the current needs and buildings are falling apart in the older campuses, eg. UHM.

kimo no such thing in administration. the selfish egomaniacs are all at the top. it attracts that kind of mentality. this professor likely got into teaching not for the pay (OBVIOUSLY) but because he/she has a passion for their subject area of specialty or research and believes in higher education and perhaps even loves teaching!
and btw, that snippy email that greenwood sent was not very smart for someone earning the pay that she does and is also considered "new in town." she's already set a bad tone and administration looks even worse to the membership now... it's sad.
