Offshore drilling an emerging campaign issue in NJ

New Jersey , eager to continue getting revenue from its 127 miles of tourist-friendly ocean beaches, has generally inspired its elected officials to oppose offshore oil drilling.

Hey Little Dick ,I'm a card carring conservative ( Jersey Resident , point pleasant on the shore)and since no conservatives are or would even consider running in this garbage pit of a State I have to vote Republican because it's the closest I can get to what I belive in.but i will not vote for anyone who will not drill....get it? Let me explain, no drill no vote...I will however vote for your opponent no matter what his position is..thank you

I find this rather amusing that there is a fear that drilling will chase away tourists. Here in Alabama we only have 42 miles of beach (not including a couple of hundred miles of bay shore). However, we have had offshore drilling for decades and never a single spill. Much of our oil and natural gas revenue goes into a trust fund that has reached over $3 billion. Interest from this trust fund is now a major contributor to the state budget. Our beaches, far cleaner and prettier than those in NJ, are loaded with tourists almost year round. In fact on July 4th there were traffic jams 60 miles long. Aren't people in NJ sick of paying so much for gas and criminally high taxes to boot? Our home would probably sell for $500k to $700k in NJ. Yet our taxes were less than $2000 this year. And to boot our schools are generally just as good as those in NJ and college entrance exams are about the same for the two states.

This is about a bad idea.
All the off-shore drilling in the world isn't going to stop the world from running out of oil.
.
It is time to develop technology to aleviate this crisis - AND - DRILLING AIN'T IT.
.
..Prolonging the pain - and the next time there will be no time or any way to develop the technology.
.
..Wether its hybreds or electric cars NOW IS THE TIME TO BEGIN -.-.- N O T -.-.- T O M M O R R O W

One of the main reasons for more domestic drilling is the stabilization of oil and natural gas markets. We will never see cheap gasoline again, especially with huge demand increases from emerging economies such as India and China. Stable oil and natural gas markets will allow for the development of new and improved technologies such as natural gas, electric and compressed air drives. Being a "latter day" Luddite will only create economic disruption, social instability, and poverty.
