Lucas at Large: Lucas at Large: Taking time to remember Crazyle...

Full story: The Capital Times

Elroy Hirsch, otherwise Forever 40, would have been 86 today. Born on June 17, 1923 in Wausau, Hirsch was a Hall of Fame football player and Hall of Fame fundraiser, whose indefatigable spirit is still manifesting itself years after his death in such things as the Crazylegs Classic, a mega-popular run/walk that is now going global.

Crazy legs was good for Wisconsin sports, but I have to think that Pat Richter will go down in history as the best AD at Wisconsin.

I remember meeting him at a West High basketball game when he was doing radio. He had suffered a concussion playing as a running back in the old American League, or whatever it was called, and had retired. I had watched him in college, both at UW and then at Michigan (where he was a starter on their basketball team.) When I asked if he would ever play again, he said "Nope, too small."

A year or two later he became an end with the Rams, and the rest is history.

I remember him for his impromptu speech from on top of the Flamingo bar entrance on State Street when the Badgers ended years of frustration in football and beat Iowa at Camp Randall. Also buying pitchers of beer for thirsty Badger fans in some bar next to Boston Garden when the Badgers won the NCAA hockey title. A great guy!

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Capricorn

You're in an industrious mood but you'll be happiest if you can be left to your own devices as much as possible. It's not that you're feeling unfriendly, simply that you won't be able to concentrate very well if you're surrounded by lots of people. If you haven't even started writing your Christmas cards yet, try to remedy that at some point today.
