My fishing buddies and I were on the scene within minutes after the accident. Some observations:
1. An older gentleman who took the lead did a great job in directing others. I believe his decision not to remove the little boy who had an ugly compound fracture of his upper leg was wise. I agree with him that to remove the young man certainly risked the chance that the little boy would bleed to death.
2. I don't recall that the airbags had been deployed for anyone in the Chysler minivan. Certainly, this failure at least contributed to the death of the dad who was penned against seat with the dash and the injuries to the little boy.
3. When we left the scene the mother who also died, appeared to be unconscious. She was, however, breathing. Not much attention was being given to her, I suspect because the well meaning people at the scene did not know what to do.
4. The response by medical/emergencey personnel was extremely slow. We were shocked that given the reputation of that highway for serious traffic accidents, the county, the state, or even the feds don't have emergency response facilities or units more readily deployable. Indeed, my brother who is a retired police officer, went up to a ranger or game warden who was in a pick-up truck to advise him of the situation. All he did was radio to someone, stay in his pidkup, and otherwise become flustered and intimidated by the circusmstances.

The images of this tragedy will remain with the four of us forever.

According to the news I saw, the semi – truck driver declined any medical treatments that are required in a car accident. Therefore, this point is very suspicious to me. Also, this mysterious accident was briefly completed as a simple car accident without any eyewitness or evidence. The police who was handling this situation only listened to the semi – truck driver and injured daughter, who couldn’t recall her memories of the accident.
In my opinion, this accident can’t be concluded only by the voice of the survivors since they were the victims of the accident. There must be an eyewitness like nearby person in the scene. For instance, the witness could be any drivers following the victim’s car.

Please send any helpful information to either: soonpark@dreamwiz.com or dslee@nuri.net

Did anyone see the news article where the semi-truck stopped on the RR tracks and its trailer got hit by a TRAIN?
A similar accident happened about 10 years ago where a semi-driver (tractor-trailer rig driver) pulling a flat-bed trailer hauling some kind of pipes drove around the crossing gates of the railroad tracks, stopped in the middle of the tracks and got hit by an AMTRACK TRAIN. MANY people were killed, and the truck driver had done the SAME THING BEFORE!
Later, he expressed only mild regrets that many people had been killed. Tried to follow up on the story but nothing else was printed about it.
ALL of this has been going on since they "de-regulated" the trucking industry in the early 80s.
I can remember a news story in the mid-80s where a highway patrol officer was driving across an interstate overpass late at night and saw a semi going down the interstate zig-zagging back and forth with a CAR trapped under the trailer and a shower of SPARKS was flying out. The driver of the truck finally managed to break the car loose from the trailer and went on down the highway.
The State Trooper initially stopped by the car and saw the mangled wreckage and saw that there was a badly bleeding woman trapped inside. The trooper had to make a "snap-decision" as to whether to stay with the victim or pursue the truck. He decided to pursue the truck. When he pulled the truck over and confronted the driver, the driver said, something like, "I think there's a WOMAN who's been hurt REAL BAD back there."
HOW many TIMES can something like this HAPPEN?
