It's the jurisdiction of MSHP.

Fail. The Sheriff is the highest law enforcement officer in the county and has jurisdiction over all roads in the county.

Lafayette County Sheriffs have never made patrolling either Missouri Highway 13 or U.S. Highway 24 or I-70 a priority.

In fact, Gene Darnell (for whom the new justice center is named) didn't even allow his road deputies to carry citation books for many years.

Why do you suppose that MSHP works out of sheriff's offices in rural counties, anyway? It helps to avoid needless duplication of patrol duties -- and who do you suppose works accidents and writes reports on same on 13, 24, and 70?

As a practical matter, this is the bailiwick of MSHP and will remain so.

Old Man, note which agency worked this accident and issued citations: MSHP.

MSHP works all motor vehicle accidents within Lafayette County, unless it happens within the city limits of a jurisdiction that has a police department. But if it involves an emergency motor vehicle within city limits of a jurisdiction they work the accident. I routinely see Deputy Sheriff's and Highway Patrol on all major highways and I-70 within the county.
Note that they do not have jurisdiction over every roadway in the county. They can not enforce speed limits on city streets, unless it happens to be a state right of way. You also can't point the finger at law enforcement because of an accident. If someone is going to drive over the speed limit they are going to do it. Just like talk on the phone and not pay attention to the roadway or drive careless or intoxicated.
I don't blame the carry out at the grocery store when the plastic bag rips in half! Work a shift in their boots and then come back and post a blog on that. I greatly appreciate what they do for our communities day in and out. How about taking a look at www.lcsheriff.com and looking at the stats over the last four years. Pretty good for an under staffed department thats communtiy keeps growing.

Good post.

"The one who knows", do you have any insight into why Lafayette County deputies would have responded to a MVA on Ussery Drive in Lexington, which involved the Lexington Fire Chief? This was back in 2002, and the deputies' picture was on the front page of the Lexington Fish-Wrap. Perhaps this was no more than their idle curiosity, but it involved a city official known to have a chronic seizure disorder making it potentially more dangerous for him to drive.(I voted to hire this guy as a full-time firefighter in 1992, and he told nobody about his problem during the hiring process).

To clarify, the Fire Chief was off duty and in his personal vehicle at the time of this accident near his home.

If they responded it was due to the nature of the call. I can assure they did not work the accident, that would have been L.P.D. or the M.S.H.P. if an emergency vehicle was involved. It's called Assist Other Agency (AOA) alot of departments help each other out from time to time. As the old saying goes, one team, one fight.

I think it's funny that ppl who don't live here talk all this trash. Lafayette County has came along way since Alumbaugh took office. County patrols all the highways in their county, enforces their ordinances. They enforce the County speed limits and also the state stautes . They also do a whole lot of patrolling in I-70. But a sad thing is that they spend alot of their valuable time not patrolling but answering calls at the mobile park in Bates City. And and the Fire Chief didn't have this problem when you hired him Weller. And he doesn't have to disclose that info if he doesn't want to. He crashed because of a cardiac problem, and his condition now is the result of that incident he had. County does alot that ppl don't see. They help alot of the agencies i.e...Odessa, Bates City, Concordia, Higginsville, and Lexington. These towns usually only have one officer working on the mid night shift alone. I think that the Sheriff's Dept, has came a long way and has a dang good name for it self. It's just not all the "good old boys"anymore. It became an actual Law Enforcement Agency. All MSHP Officers like to work MVC(Motor Vehicle Collision). That is what they through the academy for, go ahead and ask them. As the "The one who knows" said, put their boots on and see how you do. Trust me their big boots to fill.

I'm a Lexington resident and I approve this message. LOL

That the current Lexington Fire Chief/EMS Director was barred by City Council from operating any emergency vehicle, for a period of time during the middle 1990's, precisely because of what he conceded to them was a chronic and pre-existing seizure disorder. When Council was satisfied that his meds were effective in controlling this potentially dangerous medical condition, he was allowed to resume his normal duties. My source was there -- a member of City Council involved in this situation directly at that time.

If a medical condition poses a potential threat to public safety, and the safety of co-workers also, one has a moral obligation to disclose it, and in this case to have given up the dream of being a firefighter. There was, in fact, serious discussion of firing him because he did lie by omission during the hiring process, but this wasn't done because of ADA and potential litigation.

As evidenced by the accident in 2002, and earlier incidents which led to his duty restrictions as explained above, meds have to be adjusted from time to time to remain effective.

WHAT IF HE HAD A DRIVEN THE PUMPER TRUCK INTO A SCHOOL BUS FULL OF KIDS? It was that time of day, but luckily he was off-duty in his personal vehicle and the only casualty was Norman Ross's front porch. THANK GOD!

As to MSHP, not a single bit of negative comment has been made here. Only some question about the jurisdiction of various law enforcemment agencies.

Maybe Sheriff Alumbaugh is forgetting that it's the TAXPAYERS who deserve credit for the new Gene Darnell Justice Center.

And voting Morgan will bring back the Good Ol' Boy system. Ask Everett why his son got fired and why he is really running.

his son got fired because he couldn't hack it. word is morgan isn't his daddy and was scared to death to get into a physical altercation unless at least three other officers were present. there was a reason why he failed the highway patrol academy in the first place. And by the way bringing back the good ol' boy system is not a good thing. you think it's political now just wait. Nobody has a shot at beating kerick because the stats don't lie, lafayette county is a better place since his election.
