Walk in their shoes

Will never shut up wrote: To those of you who work at Broughton hospital, no one is saying that you don't have difficult jobs. YOu have very hard but important jobs. It is obvious that the NCI classes lyou are taught are worhless. I think in certain situations you should be able to protect yourselves and other patients. NOt all patients there are violent people and should be protected from the violent lot. The problem in this story is that a 300lb man sit on a guys chest while the guy was face down. NOt to mention, the workers came from behind and tackled this guy and for what, digging through a rubbish bin. If you read the autopsy report his airway was comprimised before he hit that floor. Common sense here, if you are fat laski perse, then don't sit on someones chest. Sit on the legs or arms. ALSO NOT TRUE!!! He is nowhere NEAR 300 lbs. The Media lies-in case you didnt know that!!!

patient wrote: broughton sucks. Yea most of the patients think that. But where would you be without Broughton? Family cant deal with your behaviors, you cant work, no where to live. Better be glad Broughton is there for you or otherwise you would be on the streets. Broughton is providing you free meals, a bed, a/c or heat and you basically sit around all day watching t.v or going to vr. sounds like a pretty good deal for free.

You are right, the media should get its facts straight before printing something to the media. Then again, does it really make a difference between 200 or 300lbs? Still quite large. Second, whether the accused was sitting or lying;the point still remains that the accused did not use proper NCI techniques which requires that the airway not to be compromised. They got him to the floor pinned his legs and his arms, was there a necessity to lye/sit on the patient's torso? Third why didn't they tell his family the truth about how he died? compressional asphyxiation is not the same as falling and hitting head. Honesty is best policy don't you think? I think that those of you who support what this guy did should be restrained so you can see how it feels to have the weight of 3-5 people pushing you down to the floor. I guarantee you won't like it. You should walk in your patients' shoes for once!

Frustrated Citizen

My Mother is in Broughton right now for her bipolar disorder. She had to be involuntarily committed there because the hospital in our hometown had no available beds and she refused sedation. She has been in the hospital for over a month and seems to be doing much better and ready to go home. I am having trouble getting the Social Worker to call me back, and the staff have been anything but forthcoming regarding her health status. I am very frustrated with them. She is ready to come home but they seem to be stalling for some reason and will not keep me informed about what is going on and when she will get out. Also, the doctor said he would run a series of test on her that he has yet to perform. Any suggestions on how to get her out of there???

She will have to sign the HIPPA papers before anyone can speak with you about her. If she dont, they cant talk to you about her condition. You may think she is ready to come home but you are not with her for 24 hrs a day. She may be good with you but not at other times. See if she will sign the HIPPA papers so they can speak with you about her.

You know, i dont know what to believe about anything these days... for 1:Jessie from Fremont... i agree w/your statement, only partially though! You're right, 1/2 these people do not know the abuse the staff endures but at the same token, you have no right at all to say the family "dumped" their loved ones in a hospital or institue just b/c they didn't want to take care of them or dont want to "show" their love or care by not being there to take care of them. for one, over 1/2 of us may not have been able to afford or go to school for the training and education such as you, therefore, we have full time jobs, some even 2 or 3 jobs, and we dont have them or not able to stay home and care for them around the clock like they really need. I believe you would find that it takes a lot of attention and time dedicated to the people w/specail needs thus they've been put in a hopsital or institution such as Broughton, so they can receive the round the clock care as they need and get the meds they need to help them. We, as the family, do as much as we can to care and visit and do all we can to show we love them and care for them. Furthermore, it is YOUR job, you knew there would be combative patients, that's anywhere you go, in hospitals, in schools and anywhere... so you sign on to work in a MENTAL institution, you know to expect to have issues such as those... and yes, first reaction would be to hit the patient back, but you know what, that only provokes them to begin with. i was a CNA for 8 years, and i've worked w/very many combative patients, but found that when i spoke to them kindly and softly, and explained to them what i was going to do before and as doing it, and was patient and took my time w/them, they respoded to that a lot better. they cannot help their condition and put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel?? it's like a prison to them, not being able to go out of a small room, or outside or anything... they're also scared, not knowing what's going on... maybe some have had a abusive childhood or a very traumatic event to happen, thus you not knowing exactly what happened to make them the way they are, you still need to put yourself in their shoes, treat them the way you would want to be treated! would you want someone to just snap at you, tell you if you didn't do what you're told, you were getting restrained or had to be placed under special observations or something like that, that is scary to a "normal" person, let a lone someone who cannot really think for themselves or care for themselves and even know what is really going on around them... so next time you want to criticize the family for just "dumping" their so called loved ones somewhere, just remember.... we're not all able to care for them 24/7 as other people are, and thus why we place them somewhere we feel a safe environment for them to recieve treatment and be cared for.

Jen, You think you can talk these people into behaving, you are welcome to come to high control and try. We have had alot of staff like you who either got their faces mashed or ran home crying to mom. Come on over, we will get the mop ready to clean up the mess they will make out of you. Its a good thing you dont work with these type people daily. You are the kind of person who will get others hurt by you running your mouth. AND,,,, Yes, alot of people do dump their family members here, never to return. out of sight, out of mind.

Crow wrote: Investigate How Many Illegal Foreign Doctors They Have working at Broughton Hospital and you will find enough information to CLOSE IT DOWN And I suppose you will open your home to all the people who live there because their loved ones couldnt handle them at home. Where do you think these people will live? On the streets? Then you will be the first n line to complain about all the homeless people. DUMB A$$!!!!!!!
