State Level of Investigation is not going to do anything. They are abusing people and Foreign Doctors are experimenting on victims.

they need to investigate these matters better. the mentally challenge people are put here for a reason the people abusing them will be judge accordingly when the time comes the foreign doctors there are prob experiminting on them and that is just wrong they are not lab rat they are people just like you and me they are just special

you cant blame the people who work for Broughton for the death, and there arent any illegal foreign doctor over there either. So Crow you need to stop disrespecting other people and worry about your own self, and that goes for you and any body else that it posting these comments!

Broughton Hosptial is inspected by the Joint Commission, Medicare and Medicaid, The State Health Department, and many other agencies. All the physicians are licensed by North Carolina and credentialed in specialties.

if you really think they could get by with "illegal" doctors, well you are just gullible when getting your info. there is not a chance they could get by with that.

as for the abuse, you think charges shouldve been filed in this incident? what would you have done? i dont know the person who did it, but i do work in a home with people with tramatic brain injuries, and i am here to tell you sometimes you HAVE to protect the person, yourself and others. how would you go about it? perhaps sitting on them wasnt the best idea, but what would you do? now before you answer that, eliminate any answer that involves using your HANDS to grab them or restrain them, as you dont want to bruise them! now what?

I was at Broughton Hospitol when the young man was murdered. The guy who did it will face the judje of all judjes when he gets killed or passes away. That hospitol stays in bussiness because #1 it is the only place that employs most of Morgantons people. They are in cohoots with the police,the korner and so on. It's a creepy run down hell hole where no human being should have to endure. It's an absolute disgrace.The patients are severly abused,injured and murdered by Dr.s and employees.I pray one day this hell hole gets shut down.Bottom line the young man was murdered and the sun of a bitch got away with it for now,but remember ass holes what goes around comes around.That place is employed by a bunch of spineless worms including Dr.Wheeler,Dr.James,Dr. Nathani,Dr.Fresca and all the rest of the criminals who are totaly stealing from the state of North Carolina.Scum of the earth,each and everyone of you. I hope you rot in hell for all you've done to people.

I, myself, have a mentally ill family member and made the mistake a few years back of going to Broughton for help. My family member was also abused by staff. I understand at times that they need to be reprimanded as anyone with these kinds of problems does but this kind of abuse that results in death?

And, I guarantee you that there were 10 people there to restrain this one man. Let's please get real. A death due to being suffocated does not happen instantly. THEY COULD SEE THIS GUY COULD NOT BREATHE!!! Don't people realize that he at first had to pass out or something before he died? Why didn't the bully get off of him at that point?

This is plain and simple. A state-sanctioned murder in Burke County.

I can tell by the posts who are the disgruntled former (or current)patients of Broughton. While I in no way condone the actions of the staff member involved here, I have to wonder what is the whole story. Put very simply the CNAs at Broughton are there to provide care and security for ALL the patients, if the Patient who died was a threat to other patients, himself, or other staff members then he had to be dealt with, you cannot let someone injure themselves or others if it is in any way preventable. There is training on how to deal with situations in the hospital setting and certain procedures to follow, unfortunately these don't always work, and you have to do the best you can to try to prevent injury. In the time I worked for Broughton I saw my share of combative patients and had to deviate from training on occasion, in every case that deviation resulted in the PREVENTION of injury for patient and staff, also in many cases the patient in question, after calming down and thinking things through, thanked me and the other staff members for the way we handled things. This incedent is a terrible accident and was investigated. The Burke county police are very thorough in their investigations, and Broughton has an excellent police dept made up of very dedicated officers, neither agency would ever condone any improper action by staff much less murder.
To those former patients who have written in with your accusations and complaints, Stay on your meds, stay out of trouble,and do what your treatment team tells you and you wont have to worry about having to return to Broughton.

I am not and never have been a patient at Broughton so there are no need for meds here, thus I can freely, clearly speak my mind. I have a friend for whom I am his Health Care Power-of-attorney who was involuntarily committed by the Caldwell County Sheriff's department a few days ago first at Caldwell Memorial hospital and then at Broughton. If I had been home I would have said Frye Regional and he would not now be at Broughton. On arrival at Caldwell I was confronted by Deputy Sheriff Dunn when I told her I was the power of attorney for my friend. She abruptly told my my POA papers didn't mean squat and that the Sheriff's office was in full control. My, but how her attitude changed after a quick call from my attorney to the ER head at Caldwell. I more or less implied if she wanted to be the bitch with me that she would not win. I have also expressed my concerns to Broughton personnel concerning the matter of the deaths and fall of patients there and the loss of Broughton's one million dollar a month in Medicare and Medicaid funding from the Federal government. Now we begin the waiting game, but rest assured Broughton administration and staff...I WILL BE WATCHING YOU!

I am interested in your post in particular. I have a misplaced brother from Broughton. I understand that sometimes they farmed them out to rest homes. If we were able to talk in private, do you think you might be of assistance?

Just so you all know from someone who is not a mental patient from Broughton Hospital, but does have a little inside info; My brother was placed there back in the 60's for schizophrenia. He was given electro-shock treatment therapy before they really knew what they were doing with it. My once, genius-level brother is now a vegetable.
I suppose that's one way to calm them down and keep them from being a nuisance.

I would like to comment on an ealier remark. Just because people are critical of Broughton does not mean that they are patients,have been patients, or will ever be patients at broughton. Secondly, if patients would like comment about their threatment at any of the hospitals, they have every right in the world to do so. After all, they are the ones recieving the services, not us.
I don't think the answer to this problem is to close broughton or any other hospital in NC. From the stories that I have read regarding this issue,I gather that there is not enough staff and places to treat the mentally ill. Shutting hospitals down will only make it worse. We simply need more community based treatment centers which should take the load off of the state hospitals. The workers of the hospitals are forced to work double shifts which is causing them considerable stress. Studies have proven that if workers are continuously stressed, this causes burn out which can then lead to health problems, including mental health problems. The state needs to get their sheisse together and give more money to these hospitals so they can hire more staff. They also need to give the health technicians a paly raise.

I know someone that works there he said he had hit a patient there before becase the patient broke his watchband. And he suffers from mental problems him self the staff helps him hide these problems from the doctors and admin that works there hes a CNA. Not sure if if he is the one involved in this. his name is Brandon.

I see all these posts about patient abuse. has anyone stopped to think about the staff abuse? I worked there for a long time and there was a staff member killed in the elevator by a patient, a housekeeper ended up with a broken neck thanks to a patient just to mention a few.all the people here who posted about the patient abuse, how would you like to work in a place, day in day out, where you could easily be injured or killed? staff members have had arms broken, jaws broken, fingers brokens and the list goes on. Just a question. What would you do if you were getting attacted by a patient? The self protection classes we were taught helped a little but it takes alot of self restrain to not hit back or smack a patient who spit in your face. Lots of these people KNOW they can get away with it cause staff are not allowed to defend themselves. SO. Tell me what you would do if you were being attacked by a patient? Do you have the self control it takes to not fight back?

I worked at Broughton for 30 + yrs and had many fingers broken, a few teeth knocked out and my nose broken. i never smacked anyone back.

I also retired from Broughton after 31 yrs. I received many broken bones, a broken nose, teeth knocked out, a broken shoulder, all at the hands of someone's loved one. Someone who was afraid of their loved one and put them in Broughton because they were dangerous. Well, If family members wont step up to the plate and care for their mentally ill family, someone else has to. Then they complain and try to sue someone if their loved one is hurt the least bit. They never stop to think what this person was doing to someone else when they got hurt,just that their poor mentally ill family got hurt at broughton. As someone else posted, staff have been beaten to death there by patients ( someones loved one who they could nto control and dumped them at broughton) But does the family ever worry when their loved one beats up a staff member or kills one of the staff? Nope. They couldnt care less. Its their job is all they say. Ok, its their job to keep these mentally ill people from killing someone, not to get killed themselves.
I suggest all of you who are complaining about the treatment of patients at broughton to go get a job there and spend your day trying to prevent getting the crap beat out of you. Better yet, GO GET YOUR LOVED ONE AND TAKE THEM HOME AND CARE FOR THEM! If you love them so much, show it and care for them. Just like nursing homes, everyone complains about the treatment of their family members they dumped there but not one of them would take them in their homes and care for them. Guess thats how they show them just how much they really love them.

Looks like the retired employees has shut this up. no one wants to work where their lives are in danger and apparently this is a every day problem there.
