There ia absolutely no reason to incorporate Harlan. Our Water/Sewer rates are already sky high. I'm already taxed to death by the state and fed. If Harlan votes to do this, I will move out.

One point in favor is that the taxes you pay to state and county will be used closer to home. Why should we have to pay Lion's Club to have street lights? The $ that would come to Harlan could be used for this. Also, they could negotiate better rates for trash pickup etc. than we now receive arranging for our own.

We already have a good negotiated garbage rate for our sub division.

You don't have to pay the Lions Club for anything....It's not a mandate.

If we would incorporate it is likely that the County would reduce it's activities in Harlan. Less Sheriff patrol, snow removal...etc. It is also possible that the County could force Harlan to pay higher assesments to keep those services. If this happens you will pay more just to live in the incorporated area. Of this I have little doubt. This is all about providing a permanent job for someone....it has nothing to do with annexation. As it is today, there isn't enough tax base to cover the increase in costs to Fort Wayne if they annex Harlan. This is just the local good ol boys wanting some power.....nothing more.

I hear the Library argument all the time....even if Harlan was incorporated, the Library is seperate from County government...they make their own decisions. Incorporation would not have saved the Library.

We are circulating a petition against it...I hope you sign it. If this goes through....it will cost you. I don't need more government control in my life.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Sagittarius

You're in a strange mood, Sagittarius. You're feeling impatient and cross, and nothing is quite right. No wonder, with Mercury and Mars retrograde, under a Full Moon lunar eclipse! But is it necessary to be quite so contrary, so determined to do the opposite of what's expected of you? Try to sort out the problem sooner rather than later, then do something energetic and therapeutic so you can burn off your nervous energy. Then you're all set for a great New Year's Eve!
