I am someone who does get food stamps, now I only get food stamps because I have two kids and I can barely afford it, but I also do have a job full time. Now I see nothing wrong with getting my kids a nice cake for their birthday with the foodstamps I get because of them.

I used to work and my husband is working now but was out of work for 3 years due to an injury the company laid him off so he got UEB but they were small. I am disabled and can't work anymore. I don't get a check as disability was denied but drs won't release me to work. I have a severly handicapped child. The job my husband has now is alot less pay than what he used to have. We have paid in taxes all our life to help others now we find ourselves needing the help. At first we didn't get help. We thought this is not us. But now we realize we need it to make ends meet. I have to feed a family of 7 and we don't get the max FS. We use coupons and lots of them to make it go further. And yes we do use FS to buy our kids birthday cake but we don't have the largest cake in the store and we don't buy alcohol. We buy hotdogs and a cake and the $5 bucket of ice cream. Ours is under $50 total and most times under $30. I also take $400 worth of groceries and pay about $150 with coupons.
My thought is if you receive FS then you should have to attend a class that shows you how to stretch them. I'm a hardcore Republican!You are NOT an abuser of the system! Welfare has a purpose...to help.(food stamps etc.) You are an authority that can help keep people off of them.

Now that being said, I am ALL about helping those who have fallen on hard times...temporarily! These deadbeats come to depend on it and worse yet, expect it...like they deserve it or something!
In my opinion, I think that basic necessities should be available for purchase...milk, bread, processed cheese, generic staples, etc. Hamburger meat NOT steak. Frozen chicken tenders NOT premade chicken cordon blue. By doing so if folks want to use their own cash for beer, cigs, or lottery tickets...that's fine. BUT if they can't pass a drug test...NO MORE MONEY....PERIOD!
I'm the same way. My family and I struggle paycheck to paycheck. We sacrifice many things to eat as healthy as our money will allow us. But then to see these folks in line use their food stamps to buy sugary, high calorie CRAP to feed their kids??? It seriously turns my stomach. I don't get upset about many things, but this boils my blood! And worse yet is when I see them wearing a NorthFace jacket that I really wanted (but didn't get because I couldn't afford it) and steering their buggy to a 3-4 year volvo SUV (while I'm chugging out of the parking lot in my old farm truck that's squeaking and squeeling)...it's just too much sometimes! Well said! Time for the freeloading, meth shakers, baby makers, mouth breathers, channel surfers, couch weights to take care of themselves. If you can't feed em, don't bred em!

who r all u ppl to judge someones eating get off of it like really...thats called being nosey an just complaining about something thats none of ur business....bunch of rich lame hickory ppl r just mad u do not recieve food stamps but dont look at it like we have it hard just supporting our families.sometimes my kid gets sick an want eat healthy so i buy anything just to get him to eat so u do not know her situation

First let me say I have used the username really for years, and I did not write that post. I personally think every program is strife with abuse but as long as the good out weighs the bad and puts food on the table for adults or children then the program is a success

What is the difference buying a birthday cake with food stamps than someone drawing unemployment while working a side job for cash under the table paying cash for the cake? I think the biggest injustice with the food stamp program is how they penalize the working poor or under employed people just because they have some income. Under employed people can be struggling just as hard as unemployed people but a lot less assistance is avaiable

I have had to request foodstamps for the first time in my life because my husband lost his job and I make less than 25k a year and I am a college grad. We have 3 children & it amazes me that so many people assume that people who are on foodstamps don't have a job. I personally know of a few families who are in a similar situation and they are all hardworking and have just fallen on rough times like so many American families.
