I was at a local big super grocery store and was in line behind a woman with 3 carts She had a HUGE birthday cake in one cart that almost covered the basket area of the cart that said happy birthday keisniwa.Another cart had bags and bags of chips and big gal jugs of pickles, 4 30.00+ packs of steaks, a bag of potatoes and a whole array of different snacks and sodas. The last cart had big cartons of beer. She pulled out her food stamp card and paid for everything except the beer with it. The total was over 300.00. Then she pulled out cash and paid for all the beer. I cant believe food stamps cover items as this HUGE cake and such. Why are food stamps not made to just allow the user to buy items like beans, cereals, rice and canned foods and basic food items instead of 30.00 packs of steaks( there was 5 steaks per pack and she had at least 4 pks). Just wondering if anyone else feels sorta "jipped" when they are buying their groceries and PAYING for them and cant afford such items as 30.00 steaks and watch something like the above happen and paid for with food stamps. And to top it all off, pull out CASH to pay for the beer!

Many on Food Stamps I am sure do not abuse and legitimately use the system for that which it was intended. Just don't let one abuser cloud your thinking in that all who are on the program do this. The person you saw was definitley an abuser. Many have complained to their representatives on the national and state level, however, with no change. You will always have crooks and abusers. Did you voice anything to the person about it?

I agree, Fixit...I understand and glad you did not voice your opinion to her. It wouldn't have made much difference to her anyhow and would have resulted into an ugly scene. This is the way that she lives, but there is bound to be justice somewhere in the universe. At least, I do believe that! We are just not seeing a whole lot of it at this time here on earth.

The only way I will feel better about this situation is if she buys a 4th of July cake with our money. Of course, the beer still remains her resposibility with cash money.

I see this quite a bit. Certain people spendin their food stamp money on expensive cuts of steaks, tons of junk food, loads of sodas and high priced ice creams and such while others try their best to get the best deals for the money that they have. I also seeome who use coupons and such with their food stamp cards to make i stretch futher. But there is more of the type that buys t bones and rib eyes than the hamburger group. something should be done about this. I cant afford to buy hig priced cuts of meats and I work full time and am not on food stamps. maybe I should quit work and get food stamps an then I could eat steaks nightly.

John you could quit work and get your old lady knocked up and get everything paid for but there is a little thing called pride. If you have everything handed to you were does these people get pride in what they have? I work seven days per week and I buy everything I have no body hands it to me. Everybody says they want a better world then people need to get off their lazy butts and work and pay their on way. Instead of the young wasting welfare they are able to work and should let the old people get help. People want a better government then reform welfare.

Please wait...
Wait, you're pissed off because somebody was probably buying stuff for a birthday party for their kid or something? Have a little bit of compassion. There are some people that do abuse the system, but a lot more that are just trying to get by in this shitty economy and maybe do something nice for their family every now and then if they can.

Is there anyone here who is grateful that your condition in life is in such a positive state that you don't have a need for food stamps? We can all throw stones at the "abusers", and there certainly are some of those, but in the most cases, I believe that many countless people really need this program to meet many of their needs. Let's not stereotype ALL of the people on public assistance as being "Bad" or "Cheats", because this is certainly not the case. In fact, I know first hand some of those situations personally.

I am the original poster and I do find it upsetting that this woman bought this HUGE cake for her daughters birthday with food stamps. The main reason is I know people who are struggling to pay their medical bills and such but can not get food stamps and really need them. There is a vet who goes to our church who tried to get food stamps but was turned down because he made a couple dollars to much. This is a man who FOUGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY and has to do without food because of medical bills. Then there is this woman who is spending all this money one ONE PARTY and not really buying food to feed her family. She could have bought several cake mixes and made a cake herself and saved 50.00+ she spent for that cake. Also, if she can afford to buy all that beer SHE CAN AFFORD TO PAY FOR ALL THE JUNK FOOD! I dont want MY taxpayers money going to put on a party for someone I dont even know! But this is what this woman was doing. When my children were growing up, if we couldnt afford to buy something for them , we didnt! We didnt expect other people to buy it for them as it seems to be the idea now.The food stamp program really needs to be fixed!

Gunther...Children are innocent victims of parents in poverty. I can see kicking the lazy adult off the roles, but what do we do with the children? Do we let them suffer and die?
