I'm young, have had lots of interactions with the DTP and they have all been positive when I was acting responsibly. One time I was young, driving like an aggressive youngster, and an officer really nailed me for it and I remember thinking "What an ass..." at the time. But really, I was the ass endangering others. Since then they have been helpful in several incidences and are a generally friendly community prescense. They participate in community activities and are always respectful when treated with respect.
We do live in a tourist town that has a population that swells well above it's residency certain times in the summer, and this means we have extra police officers. We also have a police training center on Hersheypark Drive, so you may see cadets that are not even full officers driving around/ visiting sheetz/ etc. You'll be happy for them the day some event gets out of control at Hershey Park/Stadium and we have a riot, until then yes, there are a lot of them, and sometimes they might stop and check a situation that may not seem like they need to be there. Treat them with respect and ten times out of ten, you will HAVE NO PROBLEMS. I feel very safe living in this community and it's thanks to the Police. I have lived here all of my teen years and into my early twenties, and have never once felt like I was profiled or targeted due to my age.
Some examples of police interactions I have had (I'll keep it to recent ones):
- My child attended a local function, and several police officers showed up and taught them bike safety. They gave her extra stickers (big deal to a four-year-old) and did a good job showing her that the police are there to help, taught her dial 911, and were generally just friendly.
- Was given tons of free legal advice from a detective involving a domestic issue (divorce is messy).
- I live along a busy road, and every day I see people being appropriately ticketed. It's upsetting to have people drive by doing 60 in a 25, and I smile every time I see one pulled over (especially if they pull off the main road and right behind my house so me and the kid can watch from the window).
I feel like a lot of the posts are complaining about the cops coming and busting them for having a party. When I was young, I had parties, did things I shouldn't have, etc., and was generally respectful of others and responsible and never never never had any police come. One time they came when we were in the State Game Lands partying at like 3AM (hahaha, good old times) and simply asked us to leave, because we didn't act like jerks to them and weren't disrupting others. If you are having a loud party with 30+ people all underage in the middle of a conservative, upper-class (most of Hershey) area, expect the police to be called. If you start going on and on about your rights, think about your neighbor's rights to have a quiet evening, or a families rights to go out to pizza without people acting in a way to illicit a police response in the parking lot. Act like a responsible person, you will be treated like one, whatever your age is. Act irresponsible, you will be treated like a jerk, whatever your age is.
You're right... standing outside my friend's car finishing off our sodas is "acting in a way to illicit a police response". You cannot justify that as acting in a way warranting 3 squad cars, the K9 unit and a breathalyzer.

Derry Twp police officers are the best! They were so, so patient with & kind to my elderly mother when she refused to give up her car keys & was caught several times, out on the road, driving in a dangerous manner. They contacted me, made sure my mother did not hurt herself or another, and were understanding & respectful, yet very insistent with her to give up her license. WONDERFUL, professional people. And they have to put up with the PUNK above - Informed Citizen - You might earn a degree & whole pile of money but you'll still be you -- an idiot.

No Name says( WE AND SEVERAL OTHERS WERE GIVEN A CITATION FOR ACCIDENTLY MAKING A WRONG TURN ONTO A BUS ROUTE IN HERSHEY,WE ARE NOT FROM HERSHEY). The area you are talking about is clearly marked with no turn signs. I suspect you just didn't want to follow the rules. If you couldn't read those signs. Signs for the New Years celebration would have been useless.

For those of you who hate the police and trash them here......

Who is it that you are going to call when that heroin junky kicks in your door to take your valuable property or harms your family. If you call these men and women you "Hate" they will still come when you call and do thier best for you.

Hope you never need to call on them

Hershey Resident, I would like to know what your definition of a "punk" is. If being a 20 year old full time college student and worker with no criminal record is a punk then I am one. If being a Dean's list student every semester standing in Smeal School of Business (one of the best in the nation) I am one. If voicing my opinion about a police force which oversteps its authority I am a punk. How can you honestly tell me I am a "punk" when all I do every day is go to school, work and never break ANY laws. You seem like the punk to be calling one of this nation's most productive youth a punk. Get it straight, people like me are the future of this country and will be footing the bill for all of those planning on retiring someday. It might be best not to bite the hand that will eventually be responsible for taking care of you and the older generations.

I challenge anyone to kick in the door to my place. No police needed here, only me and my 2nd amendment rights which I will practice. I am more than capable of protecting myself against anyone who means me harm in my residence.

Yes they have a bad reputation, brought on by their own actions. A few lying disrespectful officers can hurt the reputation of all. Unfortunately the ego boosting, power hungry officers have the ability and the misguided respect of their superiors to accomplish this.

It's nice to know that you don't proof read your material. I'm sure your college work reflects your lack of attention to detail. What's also clear to us readers is that you are the arrogant one. I appreciate your confidence with regards to your outlandish business career expectations. Have you heard/read anything about our economy lately. Since you sound like a spoiled brat, wasting space in your college classes (which I'm sure someone else is paying for) that your career plans will lead you to an Assistant Manager position at your closest Turkey Hill or if you're lucky perhaps KFC? I own several successful businesses and with your dumb-ass attitude, would not hire you to clean toilets. Good luck!

I think it's funny you came on here and then grammar checked an online post which I do not even care to proof read. When I post online I never proof read or even care to have good grammar, let alone perfect grammar. Seems like you must be a cop, know one, or be married to one cause your behavior just exemplified the type of anal behavior befitting of a Derry Township police officer. For your information, I am a business administration major at Penn State's Smeal School of Business with a 3.84 cumulative GPA. Go online and look up Smeal's ranking amongst other business schools in the nation (You will be surprised to know that it is one of the best in the entire country). So trying to make it seem like I am ignorant is quite funny because I can guarantee that I am smarter than you, will have a better degree than you and will definitely make more money than you. This is why the D.T.P. hate college kids. They know that we are smarter, are working towards better degrees (Not just associates degrees which most cops have) and will make way more money than them. It must really irritate them to know that in less than 2 years when I graduate I will be making more money than them and will yield more power in the community. After all, pretty much anyone moron can be a cop, but not every cop can be a business leader in America.

Ritchie,

Your blind assumptions truly amaze me. I just completed my fall semester of my junior year in Smeal College of Business with a 4.0 GPA for the semester and have a cumulative of 3.9; clearly this shows my lack of attention to detail with regards to my classes. I truly must be a waste of space in these classes earning subpar grades like this. With regards to me not getting a job, or having outlandish career expectations let me enlighten you my friend. Smeal is #1 with corporate recruiters in America and around the globe, check the link.(http://www.smeal.psu.edu/corp/recruitJ ) For some reason I have a feeling that I will not have a hard time finding a job upon graduation, but I appreciate your concern. After all, small business owners rarely work their way to the top of the corporate ladder; that job is normally left to the graduates of prestigious business schools such as Smeal. I also am not upset in the fact that you will not hire me to work for you. Working for a small business owner in a suburban town is not what us Smeal students are taught, or expected to do. Most of us will pursue the corporate route because small businesses are well a bit elementary for us. Besides, I would not want to break your bank trying to pay for my salary. Here is a survey taken from graduating seniors and their employment rates as well as beginning salaries. I am a Management major.(http://www.smeal.psu.edu/corp/recruit/Full%20... ) In anticipation of any rebuttal, I have been employed for more than 3 years by a corporation in the area, a clean criminal record and was just accepted into the Golden Key International Honour Society for ranking in the top 10% of my class. I will find a job upon graduation because even during poor economic conditions such as the ones we are experiencing right now, those at the top have little to no trouble finding employment. Best of luck to you and your businesses. I would love to know the names of them so I can patronize them for you during these tough times to help a fellow businessman out. God Bless.
