Foreign workers for Hershey protest Pa. conditions

Full story: ABC 27

Foreign students working at a candy warehouse protested conditions and pay Thursday, chanting on Chocolate Avenue under streetlights shaped like Hershey's Kisses, arguing that they were employed under the guise of a cultural exchange but toil away in what amounts to a sweets sweatshop.

If she is pocketing 200 bucks a week, then that is more than ukrainka´s monthly pay.

Bringing in Foreign Workers, under the guise of a student exchange program, using them for cheap labor because you do not have to pay social security taxes, when we have Millions of Americans out of work! Is There No Limit To Corruption and Greed in America??

What's the mtter KitKat, wouldn't Hershey hire you?

BTW I have worked at locations where Foreign Students were hired for the summer. They were for the most part lazy partiers who did nothing but loaf and complain.

Those that applied for student exchange programs knew very well that they can not be paid as US citizens.
All they had to do was read their contracts better.

You are quite wrong. While they cannot be paid as U.S. citizens many of the foreign students get visas to work during the summer.
I remember five Russian girls who worked at Crater Lake National Park for the Concessioner. They rarely did aywhere near the work they were supposed to do but they got away with it bcfause all five were sleeping with the unit manager who oversaw their work.

This is appalling. While ceo's walk away with unearned millions workers are being asked to accept a reduced standard of living. Workers need to organize and take what's theirs, by force if necessary. I will not purchase another hershey's product! Amazing how many support corporate greed! What a bunch of vermin!

No but I worked there for a number of seasons. What was going on is often common knowledge.

BTW- If the foreign workers do not like conditions let them go home. I am sure American workers would be glad to take the positions. For those going home I am sure they will find good conditions and pay at home-- after all isn't that why they came to America in the first place, becuse things were so good at home?

Here's some truth to the matter. These kids are given a choose of where they want to work when they come and are told what they will be doing. They make the same pay rate that the Americans do for the same exact job. The problem is not with the Hershey Co or its Vendor Exel it is with the organization that brings them here. The reasons for them to have very little money left is due to what they pay for rent and bills which Hershey and Exel have nothing to do with. And living almost paycheck to paycheck is what millions of Americans do every day of their lives, so technically it is the American way.

I live in Hershey. And no I never applied, nor would I ever! Hershey is one of the greediest companies I have ever seen! And talk about corruption, where do you want me to start. Ummmm lets see, how about Spring Board Academy? Or maybe, Hershey Links? Wait I got it, Pumpkin World. Crooks, with a capital C! Milton Hershey is ROLLING in his grave!! It's funny how Hershey thinks they can do what ever they want! How about all the money they were SUPPOSE to be giving to Derry TWP School District? Nice. They are getting millions in tax breaks for those kids. If you want to debate it, let me know, I have facts!!!

I'm not saying that everything they do is justified or necessarily the right thing, but what corporation does make "all the right decisions". The town of Hershey would be nothing without Hershey and the companies attached to it. And to the person who said about not buying any Hershey products, well if everyone thought that way, do you realize how many people would be unemployed. If you look into any larger corporation, you will find something you don't like or things you feel are wrong.

I do not belong to any labor union. I am a small business owner who speaks the truth! Unlike you who thinks he knows, or won't admit truth! I should ask, what dept. do you work at? I think it is comical at least, when they say they are following the vision of Mr Hershey! If he were alive, he would bounce these idiots out!! And to say my my I have it in for businesses. Let me tell you, if Hershey companies can't get they're greeedy paws in a business around here, they try and do everything to stop it! So many times tourists say to me, where is the downtown? As they are standing on Chocolate Ave! You mean there is no little shops or stores we can browse or anything? So what do they do, go to nice downtown areas like Lititz , Manhiem, and the likes. BTW, if the Hershey company wants something, and you don't give it, they will take it! Remember Lucy's??
