Why would they be spraying for WNV so late in the season? That's my question. There has been an overwhelming amount of mosquitoes this year and it seems like nothing has been done to help alleviate the problem. I have a 2 year old daughter, who had been bitten more than I've ever seen on a toddler within the past 2 weeks. My husband and I were both bitten up pretty bad and it seems that the OFF sprays attract these mosquitoes nowadays! With the amount of money we are paying real estate taxes, you would think that this wouldn't even be an issue. Where is our tax money going to?

They've been afraid to spray because of the lunatic environmentalist fringe.
Now that people have died (My friends mother included)and it appears that more cases are appearing they are willing to act.

right -- count me among them.
i dont want to be sprayed.
out of approx 1.3 million people less than a dozen have died from WNV.
so the answer is to spray almost all the county?

Do local towns have any plans to post specific spraying times so that those with chronic breathing ailments won't be caught outside during the procedure?

Newsday really is the worst. This is basically a press release by the county. What residents might like to know, and what you would think a reputable news agency would ask, are questions such as:

*What, exactly, is being sprayed and are there harmful affects?

*What are the exact times and places of spraying?

*Should residents close their windows, avoid the spray, make sure pets are not exposed?

*Why is spraying taking place so late in the season?

*Has there been an increased incidence rate of West Nile? The artcile reports on two deaths, but have there been other (non death) exposures?

*The deaths reported were elderly. Are the elderly at higher risk of West Nile? If so, are there any other classes of people at an increased risk, such as children, and if so, what ages?

*Are there more mosquitos this year? If so, why?

I am glad they finally spraying: yes they should have reported as to what they will be spraying - so that we as concerned citizens, can research the chemical, the rest is common sense: they article states that spraying will take place during "dusk", you know - when the sun starts to go down - on Thursday & Friday - that means - Shut your windows - take the kids & animals inside (including any water/food dishes and in the morning- hose off your childrens play things, lawn furniture - anything you will plop your butt on & go on with your life...

Pretty hard answer. You don't care until it effects you personally. We can only wish...

FYI-I live in Bethpage

Nassau County should send around a flier that they are going to spray, they say its harmless but then so again was DDT.

I am shutting all my windows soon as a precaution.

I hope you or a loved one contracts West Nile Virus, I bet you will change your mind.

I want spraying for mosquitoes in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

to you and the other "realist" wishing me harm - i think my odds are extremely long on contracting the disease based on the stats we have seen.
the general population will suffer more from the long term effects of spraying than what the WNV will do.
but thanks for your kind thoughts.

Scourge is harmful to both the environment and humans.

Ecologically, it is harmful to trout, shrimp, and other marine life. Its label warns: "THIS PRODUCT IS TOXIC TO FISH AND BIRDS. DO NOT APPLY TO LAKES, STREAMS OR PONDS." There is still much that remains poorly understood about the ecological damage caused by Scourge. According to EPA studies, however, one thimbleful of Scourge is enough to kill the trout in an average one acre shallow pond. Scourge is applied at about three times this rate.

ten people this year infected out of 1300000 people. I think I'd rather take the gamble of potential WNL vs being dosed with chemicals.

How many breast cancer cases in the same population? What about lung cancer? What are the statistics for fatal accidents this year in Nassau?
