Who remembers when the dairy Queen opened across from First Baptist and had a 1 cent sale?

I don't remember the 1 cent sale, but I remember their dip cones. Do you remember my Grandfather's bakery, Hanks Pastry Shop?

Hey Greg- Who is your dad? I grew up on North Myrtle down the hill and up the street from your Grandparents.

Bill Binns, he used to work at Waynes years ago. do you remember my Grandfather's finger rolls, those were awesome, I have tried to replicate the recipe with mixed results. I named my youngest child after my grandfather, so there is still a Hank Binns in the world.

I remember your Dad.I lived 2 doors down from Paul Whittaker.I do remember the finger rolls and also used to buy those day old and would eat the whole dozen.

Paul Whittaker! what a character he was, he used to run us out of the pool hall, and remember Bobby who worked in the pool hall? He had a tough life bless his heart. I remember Hank well. Many a early morning I watched him cut out the doughnuts on his big table whilst I rolled the papers he had a distributorship for...the Arkansas Gazette. We would sit on stools in the bakery to roll the papers before delivering them-- when it was cold...in warm weather we would sit out on the front porch across from catfish st.

He paid us paper boys 5 bucks a week If i remember correctly. I spent most of that on doughnuts and brownies..heh heh. He made the best tasting brownies I ever had.

Most people never eat a fresh doughnut just out of the deep fryer...all the difference.

I also remember his employee that helped him at the bakery...can't recall his name--we just called him 'doughnut.

Well, the world has turned around many a time since then.

Where we are headed now does not look good.

For the first time in my life I fear for the future of America.

Sawbriar's- I share your concerns. Given the reference to Catfish, we must have grown up there about the same time.

Oh yeh...I remember you--you were a lil younger than me though. Your memories of Warren are a lot better than mine--I do have a good memory but I have been gone so long and haven't thought about all those yesteryears in a while. heh heh

I think your father had a 'auto dealership' if I recall correctly--forget which one it was --Buicks come to mind. I also remember Haynes Chevrolet, Blankship Ford and the Hargis Boys.

I am not for sure Warren was really as great as I remember it--I think when one is young everything is a lil bit better or seems so in memory anyway heh heh.

It is good to think back. I just recently read Larry Larance's book about Warren--that really brought a lot back though he was a lil older than me.

The best things about Warren to me besides Hank's Pastry Shop were of course Waynes, the YMCA, and the Pastime Theater--I barely remember the Avalon--I do recall watching a Sat.Afternoon flick at the Pastime and then having to run down to the Avalon on Main St. to get there in time for another shoot em up.

Is Wayne's still there? Do they still shoot snooker in the back? My parents would not allow me to shoot pool--but I did play the pinball machines in Waynes--would lean back against the post and play by intutition heh heh. I remember that hard click sound when you won--I became very good at that.

Is Bob Newton still alive? I haven't read the Eagle in years--he seemed to know everyone in Warren or that had ever been in Warren. heh heh He had a lot of connections for sure and a very humorous fellow indeed--but of course no one could match Curry Martin's humor(the H.S. Band director. I remember him in the H.S. Auditorium talking about the time he fell out of his boat etc.--there was so much talent in that small town. Many deserved fame and fortune--I suppose that is true of many small towns though.

I was last in Warren about 4 years ago just briefly for a funeral. It was tragic to see they had torn down the High School.

I graduated in 1962.My Uncle had theuick- Pontiac dealership. My folks were Leroy & Maxine lyon.Bob newton is still alive but Wayne's is now closed and no pool played there.warren was a great place to grow up. thanks for sharing
