The last of the Drifting Cowboys has passed away. Don Helms, steel guitar legend and the last living member of Hank Williams' genre-defining backup band the Drifting Cowboys, passed away Aug.

hank williams has always been my hero and so to was his band .noone played the steel quite like don helns.i had been talking to don since 2005 and we became good friends and being the last of the drifting cowboys does in no way make him last in country music .he ,hank,jerry,cedric and sammy will be forever # 1 in most country fans,especialy me .caint wait to hear the new recordings which are to be realeased this month . forever with them . joe bradstreet

well it is going to be a time well waiting for.this fall of 2009 is supposed to see another fine cd of our great hank williams unheard recordings.and so how i am waiting to hear that famous band.the drifting cowboys.i am so looking faward to hearing don play somthing new again,i will never get tired of listining to that sound a fan forever ''joe

I had the privilege of speaking with Don Helms on the phone and he was so gracious. RIP - Don.

received hank william unvieled last week.my god what a voice and the quality of sound is amazing.new recordings of old songs and hyms.a radio show of all things and places to find such talent.i was talking to don helms 2 days before he passed away and his last words to me were. ya know if the good lords willin and the creeks dont rise we will talk again and he said goodby joe and i said goodby don.two days later he died
