“Why do ya need to know that?” Since: Feb 07

I did see an obviously lost trucker the other day out here in Leicester. I was on the short cut road up from the fire department that runs into Newfound Rd. Crooked as a dogs butt.
Poor driver in an Ingles truck was on it and all over the road. Except for the fact he almost made me hit the ditch, I felt sorry for him. It was obvious he was lost. There was a much better route. |

My assumption is that you are not one of the idiots driving the "big rigs" through 74A from the top of the mountain (Gerton) through Fairview through Asheville. If you can stay left of center and not damage the road, or what little of a shoulder there is ... more power to you. If not, then this isn't a road that you should be on to begin with, and I would like to see the SHP up here more to actually cite the idiots who use this road illegally (yea, it's still off limits to 53 foot trucks, per the Governors office) and go left of center. I am willing to also poke along behind you as you try to navigate the road at 10mph while you are watching your brakes heat up. NO Jake Breaking, though please. Receivers should suck up the cost, and send their freight by carriers that use smaller trucks. One of the priviledges of doing busines in an area that is as pristine as this one is being able to have good roads for the tourists that they sell their crap to, to travel on. M2C |

1 Usually a 48 footer, sometimes a 40 footer, never a 53 footer and always with a day-cab. Big difference having a day-cab. I wouldn't attempt that road with a sleeper and a 53 foot trailer. They don't need to be there. No argument from me. That and the route I take is usually not my choice. Like I said about the BR Parkway and a few other "off limit" routes... if you have either permission or permits, then you can go wherever. Thanks for being nice by following and not passing in a curve. Yes, it's happened to me and, yes, on that stretch of road. Guess what the colors of the license plate were? |

A driver from FL. See I was born in FL and it isn't our faults... in FL we complain about the damn yankee drivers or the old people from the north who move there to drive slow and crappy... it's the halfbacks from NY who move to FL then to NC... not the FL natives... I PROMISE!!=]
I agree this would be a very tragic regulation that would most likely be revesed due to incidents. |

All those that drive big rigs ,never fear..........NCDOT is here.
They plan to make alot of huge road ways 4 laners or more with truck turn-arounds and stop over areas......map sites and more. They will probably be blasting mountains to achieve this. Go to NC DOT and under TIP or county of interest put in the county number. You can even get maps. US 28 will become a complete new road ending at Iotla Valley. They have more to come......they plan to be busy. Hope no one owns a home/subdivision/land in any of these areas.......... |

Seems Gov Perdue wants more transparency....and counties have to have plans "before" a TIP.....oh gee........ yep, includes Macon county.....but do not fret..... of course regional impact and ave daily traffic will remain factors.....only Jackson county has a completed CTP for the RPO......but do not worry...they will look at all roads with borders of Tenn/Ga/SC.....of course all RPO's need to be in draft form and in by Sep."so if people have heartburn", Joel Setzer, the DOT division engineer , wanted to find about it earlier not later.Sherby will run the numbers on all the exsting projects .......august should be all the counties review time.........see told ya. |

now for my 2 cents worth yes some road were not meant for large trucks in the mountains but do these people who are against truckdrivers not realize how there food and clothing get to them, by a big truck, I had to quit due to health reason and I sit and listen all day to the 4 wheeler drivers complain, that same one is the one who thinks its cool to pull out in front of usthinking that we can stop do they not realize how long it takes us to stop suddenly even doing the posted speed limit. I know I am rambling here but it irks me that they think that we are the bad drivers wish they had to go have a physical just to keep there drivers license and pass all the test that we have too just to prove that we good enough to drive and handle an 18 wheeler, oh and not all of us are burly nasty people not many are that way anyway just thats what they see on tv I am all of 5"4" little girl who drove a big freightshaker(freightliner to those of you who didn't know what that was like I said my 2 cents worth and as far as the taxpayers dollars paying for the road, I would gladly buy your tags and insurance on your car if you would pay mine I had to renew mine just to keep it going this year and it was $2800.00 just for the tag and thats not insurance. it does not include the fuel tax stamps I have to buy to go through each state, so when you think that we just tear up the roads well by golly we pay more than our fair share to drive on these roads also

1 I understand your complaints. I think they are very valid. I have alot of trouble from those same type of drivers that think they own the road,or they are the only ones on the road. They are not. Their attitude usualy causes a wreck. I am just very concerned that the beautiful areas in the mountains will become flat and everything will wind up looking like Atlanta. That place is a mess.Even with 6 lanes of traffic-both ways. Smog. Horrible. I just hope the NCDOT saves some of the mountains. When I moved to Altanta.....many years ago I-95 was just a 2 lane road. The country was just that. Country. Now all the surrounding counties are nothing more than an extension of Atlanta. Houses overbuilt. The county commissioners planned to overbuild and recorded this in one of their meetings 20 years ago. So now.....in a new house, people have to take turns running the water. What a shame. The commissioners that made those changes, of course, do not live there. They are not bothered with the everyday living problems. But back to roads. I realy do understand truck drivers problems.I also think that all drivers should be muich more thoughtful when they are behind the wheel. This includes all vehicles. People in general should be more thoughtful period. I am also very sorry you have health problems. I do also. Life just is very hard after injuries. I know. Take care. |
