Full story: Newsday

Hempstead's Central American Day Parade is meant as a celebration of independence and cultural heritage, but the drama surrounding the event is straight out of a Spanish-language soap opera.

Let's call a spade a spade here. The mayor and the village fear GANG VIOLENCE not that two women are arguing with each other.

It seems to me the tempermant of the Latin folks is such that they are too hot headed. That is probably why their countries are in such turmoil. They do not seem to be able to remain cool calm and collected in a situation that requires a clear head and common sense.

I totally agree with all these posters. I grew up in Hempstead, and we never dealt with situations like this in the 50's and 60's.

Why not? They could give out weapons, rather than beads.

What reflects badly on the Central American Community is that their home countries suck so badly that they had to leave. What I don't understand is why they want to turn here like it was there.

I guess that will go the same for Irish, Italians and all the other groups that celebrate their heritage.

If not it means you are a racist

Reflect poorly on the Central American community? Believe me sweetheart your community has never been held in high regard to begin with. Nobody is really surprised that you can't get a parade put together.
Damn right on that one. I have seen areas all over Long Island that have turned for the worse just like Hempstead and it has to do with the people that live there.

I actually would like to see the parade recieve a go ahead and let them have it and you will see the MS-13 and Latin Kings attend guns blazing; then we can hold the town in a lower regard than what it already is now. not to mention they can have their cake and eat it.

This is why, we must deport them rather then give them citizenship. We need to lock up the borders and grant hunting licences to those who live on the borders to hunt and shoot anything that gets across. You dont see conflict like this durring st. patty day celebrations. What the hell is wrong with these people. How frikin hard is it for a couple of spics to get along long enough to march down a street waving a flag for a few hours.

Is the Gay and Lesbian Alliance trying to get involved in this parade? We know they love to dress up and parade around! They apply to march in the St Patrick's Day parade every year, I can only assume that they'd want to participate in this nice peaceful, quiet event too.
Have faith the parade will happen... the check's in the mail.

The struggle for money, power and recognition seem to be the main motives of these groups. At least that's the impression of many people on the streets. My suggestion for the wannabe organizers: ask Adelante of Suffolk County how to run a unified, festive and full of pride parade avoiding the pitfalls that come with the personality conflicts.

Daily Horoscope for May 21

Aquarius

There simply aren't enough hours in the day today for you to do everything that's on your list, so concentrate on the priorities. Don't feel guilty about what's been left out and start to worry about it. This isn't an easy day because you're feeling pressured and anxious, so don't expect too much from yourself. There's less energy than usual, which doesn't help.
