First of all , let me say that I have nothing against native americans . I lived up north growing up , never had a problem with anyone . That being said , I have been following this situation and I think the canadian and american govt. need to stand strong on this . I do not believe citizens or others should dictate to the govt. how they should run their brigde or any thing else for that matter . I think nny has paid back enough and it needs to be a wash now re: this whole give the land back thing . This whole "were special" stuff needs to be snuffed . How about everyone being equal and getting the same fair treatment . I do believe the natives have milked this for all it's worth and I don't see them stopping anytime soon unfortunatly . They say we don't need armed guards yet several come to the town of stockholm with weapons , shoot a person who seemed to be a dealer with their home grown weed in possesion , and some are still in hiding with federal warrants against them . The list can go on and on with all the smuggling that goes on across the border . Everything from chicken to cigs to pot to who knows what . Let's face it , a lot (not all) natives take advantage of what they can get away with , get money the "easy" way . Maybe if a lot of natives would get honest paying jobs that don't require special treatment this whole thing would be okay . I honestly am not against the natives , I just think it's time to call it a wash , we are all equal , we all get the same benifits , we all pay taxes , we all pay for college , and so on . This is not to say I don't feel the are plenty of "takers" this side of the fence also . We are not special or perfect . Let's just call it a draw , live together in peace , and enjoy the beauty of nny . That's my dream and I'm sticking to it .

They want to file an federal law suit. They are the ones who started the problem with the bridge. They are actually so stupid because their sacred little island is full of trouble. After the Kassian accident, the U.S. and Canadian military should be on those islands. The U.S. goes into other countries to stop the crap! This giving them everything for free needs to stop. They were stupid enough to give up their land. That is their problem!

This is a complex situation. I believe that every effort must be exerted to preserve the sovereignty of the Mohawk land. That is why the current bridge must be torn down and moved entirly onto U.S/Canadian soil. Only then can we avoid harming the people of Akwesasne.

Yeah, move the border station to cornwall. then let the smugglers figure out a new route for their cigs, dope and aliens. As a friend of mine - a native friend - put it, "move the border checkpoint to cornwall and half the island will have no more income." They made their beds.

WE HOLD THE ROCK [ALCATRAZ], SAID RICHARD OAKES OF AKWESASNE IN 1969

MNN. July 5, 2009. No Canadian or US government officials are talking
to us. The guards and workers in the two checkpoints in Akwesasne have
abandoned their posts since June 1, 2009. We can come and go off the
island to the north. We can go off to the south but cant come back.
Our ancestors invoked some basic principles for us to use in such times.

The federally run prison on Alcatraz Island in San Franciso Bay had been
abandoned in 1963. In 1964 a small group of Lakota attempted to take
the Island to invoke a principle in the 1868 Treaty of Laramie. All
surplus abandoned federal land automatically reverts to the Indigenous
nations.

On November 20, 1969 Richard Oakes of Akwesasne lead Indigenous People
onto Alcatraz Island and held it until 1971. It was to prove a basic
point. This event changed the relationship between Indigenous and the
US government. Up to then it was negotiation, compromise and legal
remedies forced down our throats by the government.

The Alcatraz Proclamation was signed, In the name of all Indians we
reclaim this island for our Indian Nations. Other abandoned federal
facilities were reclaimed afterwards.

The US government knowing this principle was furious that the Indigenous
would have the audacity to invoke it. This act focused the entire world
upon this basic law. The US government was put on the spot. It could
no longer be hidden in the dusty archives of the Bureau of Indian
Affairs basement. In 1971 Richard Oakes was assassinated.

The Mohawks of Akwesasne have always asserted our rights for the world
to know. The current Cornwall Island event reveals the nature of the
relationship between the Mohawks and the US and Canadian governments.
The Canadian government knows we can assert our rights over the
abandoned buildings in the community, the highway and bridges that go
through our sovereign land.

We can invoke the Great Law of Peace which all Indigenous people adhere
to. We are one people by covenant.

The checkpoints have been abandoned because we wont let their guards
carry guns. We have not been violent in any way.

According to the principle, the abandoned US border checkpoint at
Akwesasne irrevocably reverts to the Mohawk Nation.

The Canadian Twilight Zone check point in the middle of Kawenoke on
Cornwall Island was abandoned and irrevocably reverts to the Mohawk
Nation.

The two bridges and highways onto the island are closed/abandoned by the
US and Canada. They irrevocably revert to the Mohawk Nation.

The RCMP and other foreign police who patrol the foot of the bridge in
the city of Cornwall are trespassers. This is disputed Mohawk land.
They must leave.

None of these structures cannot be torn down because they now
irrevocably belong to the Mohawk Nation. You build anything on our
land, its ours.

The US checkpoint and bridge are patrolled by US Border Security Field
Operations and a Mohawk Policeman. US Border Security is trespassing
and must leave.

We can traverse the whole community of Akwesasne as one entity without
borders. It was illegally divided by the US, Canadian and British
governments into five jurisdictions Ontario, Quebec, New York State,
US and Canada. They legislated two separate councils, tribal and band,
to divide us with their imaginary boundary line.

The outsiders cannot establish the perimeter of our territory to limit
us to small areas of our vast Haudenosaunee territory. It is our right
to decide who will cross the two bridges and enter our community and our
territories.

The Mohawk elders and people made the initial demand for no guns in the
hands of foreigners in our midst. Both US and Canadian band and tribal
councils stood together and made demands on behalf of the sovereign
Mohawk people.

The Akwesasne people took the initiative. This is an Iroquois
Confederacy issue. It affects all Ongwehonwe, our friends and allies
at the Canada- US and US-Mexico borders which were never meant for us.
The visitors cannot apply their line to us.

Rumors has it that US and Canada might build a new bridge several miles
west of Akwesasne. This is part of Haudenosaunee Territory. They have
to consult us and get our permission. They think they stole this land
outright. No so! Most people in the world know that Great Turtle
Island is ours. They cannot show any evidence that theyve legally
acquired any of our land. International law was violated by the US and
Canada when they made laws to claim our land and resources.

Arrangements to speak with us must be made through the Governor General
and US President. Mike Mitchell, the tribal and band councils do not
speak for us. Under the Great Law, they have dont speak for the
Iroquois Confederacy or Mohawk Nation. Anything they decide is not
valid because they represent the foreign US and Canadian jurisdictions.
Our people sit under the tent at the crossroads at Kawenoke and
patiently wait for them to come and make valid and legal arrangements
with us.

This is 99.9 5 b.s. . Any way you cut the mustard if canadian officials bow down to your demands they are putting their nations security at risk .I truly think this is one you won't win by whining about what happened in the 1800's . Having the rez in on any boder crossing is issue of security . You will lose this one . I would just like the native americans to stand on their own two feet and play by the same rules as everyone else . What would happen if the u.s. put it's foot down and said enough is enough . No more special treatment and no more getting away with murder . A few n/a would rebel but mose would let it pass .

Squamish Chief

Newly elected Akwesasne chief plunges into battle over armed border guards

There are times when there's little difference between Mike Mitchell's roles as a proud leader and a proud grandfather.

Firstly, there is not enough protesting in either Canada or the U.S.A. It seems to me that the natives are always the only one's sticking up for there rights. At the same time which most people don't realize is that they are sticking up for ours as well. How would any of us like to have guys with guns around our children in our back yards? Its Native land period. The border has been patrolled on the Canadian side with out guns for many years now why the sudden change? No one in government asked me if border guards in Canada should carry arms. Governments just continue to do what they want taking our rights and freedoms away and most people don't even see it. I really don't want the government to tell me what I can and can't do on my own property. As for the sudden change in Canadian border policy I believe the Canadian government is just trying to appease the American government in the "Fight against global terrorism" which if the American and Canadian people woke up would realize that it was there own government who did 911. The "War on terror" is a guise to scare people into forfeiting/tricking them to take away there rights and freedoms to promote the "New World Order". Unfortunately once again the indigenous people are caught in the middle fighting for there rights and mine and I thank them. I wonder if the Canadian government pays rent for that border crossing? We don't require a bridge of that size there any more Lakers don't use this route anymore. I say give them what they want. National security huh-check u.s. foreign policy. check u.s. domestic policy while your at it. Our governments have a lousy track record if you ask me.

I think any country should have the right to protect itself . I am not sure who would actually want to invade Canada , but they should have that right . What is wrong with having the station in cornwall anyway ? Why do we need one in on the rez anyway ? I just have a problem with the protesting when there are so many related crimes coming from there . I am not talking about a few cigs , major drugs is the biggee . How many get through for the ones caught . What difference does it make to any law abiding person weather or not the guards are armed ? I used to use the bridge quite a bit and never had a problem . I don't have a problem with the indians being equal , but for god's sake quit whining about every little thing .

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Watch out. Your mind is working overtime in full analytical mode, but you may be leaping to unfounded conclusions and reading too much into situations. The result of all this is that you might start to suspect someone's honesty or loyalty, and wonder what exactly they're up to. Don't accuse them of anything awful just yet because it may turn out that you were totally wrong about them.
