I am glad she is safe, but how does a 3 year old wander away unnoticed at any time of the day, let alone 2 am?

well, at 2 am most folks are sleeping... and some little children are very clever at getting locks and doors open...and can be so quiet when they want to be it would amaze you. My son did this once when he was little, around 2 or 3... wandered out in the yard early in the morning. My good neighbor noticed him out there and knocked on my door.. scared the bejesus out of me, let me tell you.

that same day we installed a chain lock with a key way on the top of all the doors.. that way my husband could still get in at night (he worked the night shift then) and I could sleep again...

kids are clever little beings, you have to be on your toes... jingle bells on the door is another idea if your a light sleeper.

it happens sometimes... it just does.

I had those safety knob covers on my doors, and my daughter was able to open the door at 2 years old. Even if the parents took every precaution it is still possible the child was able to figure out how to get around the "child proof" things. My daughter has also been able to open those child proof caps on medicines most adults have issues opening for years. I had to get a safe with a lock to keep the medicines and poisonous cleaners in. Luckily she never got outside because she couldn't reach the chain I locked at night.

There is also the possibility the child was sleepwalking. There was one time my son got out of bed and was about to enter the attached garage. He didn't remember a single thing in the morning. Fortunately he outgrew that stage.

A happy ending to a frightening situation. Glad to know the child is safe.
