Judged: 1 1 First is the old drive in theater that used to reside right off highway 270. Being kind of young still, I never went there. http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/9746.html Next is the old Grandview Cinema that was also off Dunn Road. This theater ran until 1987. Correct me if im wrong, but this was at the same location schnucks is now??? http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/11286.html Last of course is the old Cross Keys Dollar show theater that closed around the turn of the decade, demolished, and is now the shoppes at cross keys. http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/1031.html enjoy! |

When I was a kid, on Saturdays, Sacred Heart School used to show movies for kids in the Old Sacred Heart School building for 25 cents, and bag of popcorn for 10 cents. Circa late 50's |

One of my fondest memories of the Grandview Cinema was the stack of free tickets they used to have stacked on the courtesy desk at Bettendorfs on Thursdays.
If you were fortunate to have go to Bettendorfs on Thursday or early Friday you could get enough tickets so you and your friends could go to the 10 AM free kids show. They even had a special Christmas movie once. I forget the name, but they gave out **MAGIC** rings that were featured in the movie. We all thought we had real magic rings. But mine must have been defective because mine didn't work. ;o) |
The teen town at the American Legion Hall on Lndbergh across the street from the old Steak,n Shake in the 60,s lot of kids up there on fri nights.Good place to be.It was set up by a florissant cop. I think his name was Mr.whiteside. |

Went there a few times. Vernon Whiteside was the Police Chief at that time. That legion hall had a nice park behind it, that went down to the creek. The entrance was around where Bruce Drive is off Lindbergh. |

I believe that the Legion sold the building to Valley Ford. Valley then built new and moved up the street. But when Valley Ford was at that location, they would sponsor Bear Wrestling as a marketing tool to bring people to the dealership. You could wrestle this big muzzeled black bear, the bear would always win, and pin you, then lick your face with his big bear tongue.

Bear Wrestling? Wow! I didnt think those ever existed.
I also remember Village Square. Another of the string of Dollar show theaters that the industry eventually wanted rid of from the "savings" people were getting. One of the neatest things of that theater was the two theaters on your left by the main entrance, you could see the projection room through a large glass wall. As a kid, all the functions of the large projection machine looked so cool. |

The dollar show has not been gone for that long
My dad and mom told me that in its day the village was the largest cinema in st louis county. My dad used to sneak into the 270 drive in where clocktower is now. He and his friends also used to smuggle in beer as well. Fritz used to be an A-W Root beer. There used to be a waterslide up across from cross keys and a small water park in front of grandview? An old quarry at the end of new halls ferry a bit north of the intersection with Douglas which was a popular swimming hole. It is reputed to be haunted with access long being difficult to impossible. Bettendorfs was bought out by Schnucks? Where was the florissant bettendorfs? |
They also had bear wrestling at the america legion hall in 1957 at the first valley of flower. |

Bettendorfs use to be where Michales is now.

There used to be one of those Wet Willys waterslide attractions where the taco bell is at back in the 80s. Notice that steep hill that goes down past the drive through. i guess the waterslide by cross keys is where the lowes is today? All i can remember from that area prior is the wooded land you couldnt see past.

I remember those waterslides. The one at Grandview was where the Taco Bell is now, right on the side of Dunn. I use to go up there and watch my sisters go down that thing. I was really young and too scared to.
I remember that drive in sign where clock tower is too. Dont remember the theatre though. When I was a kid that sign reminded me of McDonalds for some reason. Grandview theatre and Vilige Square was where I saw most of my movies, and Jamestown. We werent allowed to go to Halls Ferry 14 for some reason. I remember also JC Pennys being at Grandview with HQ, and was it Goldies??? at Village square, along with that DQ and the indoor village too. Now Village square isnt so entertaining unless you consider getting a colonoscopy done or do business with the county. Either way, if you spend too much time there, your getting it up the ass. |
