That is a nice idea. Just because someone is low-income doesnt mean that they shouldnt have an animal.

1 Actually it does. Po people on welfare shouldn't be sucking everyone elses tax dollars with pets! Just like smoking, if ya smoke, no welfare. Alcohol? no welfare. Too many kids? no welfare. Pets? no welfare. You want luxuries? GO TO WORK! Pets are a damn luxury! Welfare isn't poor people's money being given back, it's honest taxpayers money going to some that need it and many that don't! |

1 Hmmm... Seems Bubbaville should have a clinic to spay and neuter humans, I sometimes wonder if the movie "The Hills Have Eyes" was filmed here in Gloucester. |

That is a tough way to put it... but proper care of pets is expensive. I have spent thousands of dollars on my pets. If you don't have the money to properly care for an animal, it would probably be better not to have one and spend your limited funds on other things like food and health care for yourself and your family.

I pay my bills and work hard at a full time job. I'm a hairstylist and make only commission and I'm still building clientele, so I don't have a lot of extra money. I don't use welfare, I don't have kids, I don't smoke, and I pay my taxes. I have pets and they are my family. I've had pets my entire life, and I think it's important if you're going to have them to take care of them and be a responsible pet owner. I think it's great that there's a low-income clinic for pets. So before you sit there and decide for yourself who should and shouldn't own pets, you shouldn't assume anyone who qualifies for low income is just a user of the system, that there's people who make a honest living who don't have extra money for a vet bill. |

1 Obviously, if you are not being honest with yourself. If you are low income and have to rely on government suport for your personal daily living expenses, then you can't afford a pet, period. Argue all you want, but the truth is the truth. You stated that you don't use welfare and that's great. So what is the point of your commentary since the earlier comments apparently don't apply to you? |

I think the point of her argument is that it should not be assumed that a low income earner is also a welfare recepient. Her points are very valid, and I agree with them whole-heartedly. Pets make your life richer, and as for "wasting money on pet care when it should go to food and healthcare", I beg to differ. Pets help to relieve stress, and being from a low income family, there is a lot of stress when you don't know if your next paycheck will cover your bills. A less stressed person is generally a healthier person. So in some ways, pets count as healthcare. I would also like to point out that there are many pets that would fit almost any income level. One of my personal favorites is a fancy rat. They make wonderful pets, don't require expensive supplies, and are very affectionate. many people say they are almost like dogs that can sit on your shoulder. Rats are pack animals and will bond with their human and give them lots of love. Of course, there are many other pets that are also well suited for low income homes, but this is just my personal favorite. I do almost agree with welfare recepients not owning pets, but I think there are much worse things to spend welfare money on. IMHO, welfare should be cut back so that those on it are forced to work for their luxuries. Especially those that able bodied but un-willing. |
