These ratings are meaningless until the test scores are considered. Check out the California APIs for a more comprehensive view of the California high schools. Until they publish the second list with the scores, then this is just a ploy to sell magazines.

Went to the state's API website and checked several of the schools in the list, and they all tested quite well. I am not sure what's your point? And isn't all the content in a magazine a "ploy" to sell the magazine? Isn't that the goal, to sell the magazine? Forgive me if I judge too quickly, but you seem bitter about something.

I posted this in the school blog last week...
The Newsweek report didn't account for how many seniors passed those tests. Here are the percentages of high school graduates with at least a C average in the UC/CSU required college prep courses, for the 2007-2008 school year:

Narbonne High 23.40%
Redondo Union High 42.50%
Carson High 23.50%
El Segundo High 17.40%
Westchester High 20.50%
Mira Costa High 85.10%
Palos Verdes High 69.20%
Palos Verdes Penisula 85.60%
Torrance High 45.80%
North High 47.90%
South High 57.10%
West High 60.40%

So, TUSD's students did pretty well. I suppose that Newsweek's analysis was limited by the lack of available national data for comparison.

I agree that TUSD has some of the best schools in the south bay. I just looked at the list and some of those schools just do not belong there...Bell, South Gate but not West High.

The API scores for Narbonne and Westchester were mediocre at best. And Carson didn't even submit scores. But in the eyes of some liberal academic, they were amongst America's best. That, in a nutshell, is the root cause of the public education system - low expectations by liberal elites.

I am not bitter about anything. I just hate to see statistics on tests taken without seeing the results. These tests are national college level tests and provide a comparison about how well students scored against everyone who took them nationwide. If everyone in a school TAKES these tests, the school would become number one on this list. Then you find out the average grade was one or 1.5 on a 5.0 scale. AP courses are accepted by UC/CSU to fulfill general education course requirements but only if you score high enough on the exams. That is why the number of students who took the test is not important but the number of students who got 3,4, or the magic 5, is critical.

Ony five states require high schools to teach personel finances. Is it any wonder that people do not understand interest and the cost of money. Do they understand capitalism, socialism or communism?

I agree with Hermosa World Watcher...who care how many people took the test...anyone can sign up for AP tests. You don't even have to take the AP class.
Scores are the true indicator. By the way, I heard more than 25-30 kids were caught vandalizing Mira Costa High School last week. Can someone tell me why the Daily Breeze didn't cover this?

If Narbonne and Carson made the list, South and West should have made it as well.

Daily Horoscope for December 30

Virgo

If the December sales are calling you, you'd better work out a budget before you leave the house. Otherwise, you'll be tempted to use your credit card first and only consider the cost of your purchase later on. Even so, you could track down some great bargains now, provided you don't get carried away and buy items that you don't really want simply because you're astonished by the amount of money you'll save in buying them. But you'll save even more money if you don't buy them!
