However, even if you knew Navajo, they had code words for all sorts of things so it didn't help.

Anyway, I’ve seen plenty of minorities get scholarship funding/jobs only to stand constantly with their hand out expecting more only to lose what they could’ve made of the situation. I've seen plenty of white kids squander what they had and ask for handouts too, but it doesn't change the history of a people that didn't have much of a chance in the first place due to extermination on a massive level. I understand what you're saying, I just don't agree as it pertains to this particular minority.

It was quite a service to our country!

What I really don’t understand is why the majority of a group of people who is so “down on their luck” perpetuates their own unhappiness and poor quality of life. It’s a decision to do better and provide better or not. All it takes is one of any group to make the right decision and do better to prove the rest of the group wrong for keeping themselves down.

mike wrote: I doubt very seriously that whomever signed this treaty expected we would pay billions of dollars every year for Indian Health Care (2010 budget in excess of 4 billion). You say "we" took their land? I didn't take their land, I have paid for every piece of land I have ever owned and I am also paying for Indian Health Care. This treaty was signed in 1787, it is time to put it to bed and let the Indians pay for their own health care, especially the tribes who own casinos. We have all had to accept changes, I was told when I started my job 30 years ago my health care would carry into retirement, not the case any longer. The Unions expected the same thing but they are taking less. Maybe the Indians got the shaft 222 years ago, but it really has nothing to do with us today, the land has been paid for a hundred times over in the past two hundred years. Time for the Indians to go to work and pay their health care like the rest of us. Congress, do your duty and say enough is enough, if we are tied to this contract, then provide them with the same level of health care that was available when they signed the contract. I for one am tired of my tax money paying for something that happened 222 years ago. <quoted text> This person should become more informed about the Native Americans. It wasn't just 222 years ago but has been going on since then. Treaties were signed ceding Indian land to the govt and health care was promised in return. If you think we are no longer obligated to provide it then would you support returning the land to the Native Americans? Also check out the unemployment rate on the reservations. Jobs are scarce because the Native Americans were pushed onto remote land far from job opportunities. Not all have casinos, especially those in remote areas that most customers would find too difficult to get to. You need to read up on the history of our treatment of these people and find out how disgraceful and shameful it was.

Just a few comments on, "We took their land and then broke the promises". 1. Natives did NOT recognize private or tribal ownership of land. A tribe that "sold" land was pulling a fast one on every other native in the area. 2. What they received was only intended to barely tide them over until they voluntarily entered the national culture as, at first, farmers. 3. 90% of all natives successfully assimilated into society by that route. Go to towns along the Ohio River and you will see thousabnds of residents with Irish, Scottish, German, Polish, Italian, etc., etc., last names but who CLEARLY show native roots. 4. Several American presidents had native roots including Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan.

Mike needs to be better informed about the conditions on the Reservations. There have been many treaties made when Native Americans ceded land in exchange for the health care. If you don't want to honor those obligations then give the land back to them. If you will read the history of the various tribes you will learn how shameful and disgraceful the government's treatment of them has been. Many were pushed into remote areas far from job opportunities. Remoteness also is why not all have casinos.

Then we promised to take care of them with reservations and health care. Looks like we broke another promise. This just shouldn't be. Congress do your duty and give them health care, real health care. For HOW long do we have to pay for what the White Man did? Who did the Indians take the land from?

I am just soo tired of hearing about the Indians this and Indians that meanwhile, the Americans are stuck having to foot the bill, while the Indians and illegals get everything handed to them. It is time we start thinking American again and the hell with everyone one else. No other country gives a darn about us.

Jack wrote: How about the Treaty giving the Black Hills to the Native Americans? Some white man trespassed and found gold. They were booted from their land. Native Americans revered the land. Not rape and exploited it. What did the brave General Custer do, sneak into their camps at night and kill men women and children. After being defeated at Little Big Horn the Seventh Calvary flag was captured, while migrating though the Pine Ridge Reservation, the new Seventh Calvary ambushed these Native Americans which at that point consisted of only, women, children, old men and women. Only one survived and that was a baby because her mother fell on her shielding her from bullets. The Col. in charge took the child into his home, but was never treated the same as his own children. When this girl died she was taken back to Pine Ridge and buried with the rest of the ambushed Native Americans. Check your history, this is true. To this day, as Americans when we want something we take it. If we think there is injustice we fight for it. Lets start fighting for something worth while. Not other peoples civil wars and their freedoms. How about the Billions of dollars we send to Mexico and other countries to curb their hunger and provide medical care. LETS START AT HOME!!!!!!!!!! How about starting on the east coast where there was a Indian Nation recognized by the goverment upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. President Jackson ignored the law and the court and the Trail of Tears began to Okla. That was a far greater theft.

Clan Ross merged with the Cherokees (at their request) in the mid 18th century. The Cherokee Nation is formally recognized as a Scottish clan in Scotland. Jackson recognized the nation - he just stole their land. Like the English had done to Clan Ross in 1747.

Thanks Jack. You said what I think. I see the Republican racist Obama haters are out in full force. Good for them. It's important that they keep showing the world what hypocritical, racist, ignorant, compassionless, fanatical, big mouthed, red necked, jerks they still are. Keep up the good work 'publican people. What would the dark side be without you? Not quite as dark, I guess.
