In my opinion the activities of certain fire comm.are criminal. This seems to be one of the best kept secrets on the Island. People should realize that these men are elected officials. They rule over fire dept. like a king over his kingdom. They rarely seek the opinion of the Chiefs office and have very little accountability to their spending. You also should realize that they are a seperate entity from the Fire Dept. Don't let the actions of these men allow you to think less off the hard working volunteers in your town.

Thank-you for commenting on this. As a volunteer in another district I appreciate it. Most people don't realize that the Fire District and the Fire Dept. are two seperate entities. It is a thankless job. People used to respect firemen and women. Now that Newsday has focused on a few bad apples in a very large bunch. They make the entire service out to be corrupt when it is not. I am proud to be an active member responding to calls day and night for nothing more than the rewarding thought that I helped someone in my community. I wish the general public would see that the majority of volunteers do it for the same reasons as me. If anyone out there wants to change it, join your local fire service.

Several posts are correct. The commissioners are not the fire department. They are elected officials of the fire district. Their task is to oversee the budget for fire protection in the district. Most if not all of the perks in a fire house such as a pool table or whatever are paid for by the members of the department or some fundraiser they may have. The district pays for the house, machines, maintenance of the house and machines, insurance, water, electric. etc. What is not evident to most is the cost of an all volunteer department vs. a full time paid department. The cost isn't even close. A paid department would need 5 men per truck times 3 shifts per day. And with all the OSHA rules etc. the costs go up even more.

Agreed there may be some things out of whack. They should be fixed and some offenders held accountable. However the system is not as bad as some may make it seem. If your house is ablaze or you are in a serious car accident those firemen will be there 24/7. and they are doing this on their time and they receive no pay.

There are other districts out there also. Ambulance is one, water, sewage, take a peek and see what you find.

I've visited the Selden Firehouse and, in their defense, theirs is not a state of the art facility. They're nice guys. That said, I'm still not entirely sure why the Selden fire department's rec room needs a fully stocked bar.

I live a few blocks away from the fire house in Selden and the sirens go off all day; this is a very busy area for them...if they want to take advantage of a few perks big deal...all I know is they are busy all day responding to emergencies.

Here is what always amazed me... I grew up outside of Boston in a great school district. My town had its own FD with 3 fire houses. Its own PD with more than 40 patrol cars. Trash pick up, H20 etc... Ant the people up there think their taxes are high. A 2 story ranch up there on 1 acre of land would cost you about $4,000/yr.

Yes, You heard me right. 1 acre, your own full time PD and FD and some of the best schools in the Northeast for 4,000.

This just shows you how corrupt NY is with their spending...

I guess the gravy train is heading into the station. The fire system in suffolk county is criminal the way money is spent with little or no oversight. Lets make one fire commission that all the district come under so that there can be important oversight on a central basis. If there is smoke there is fire an we sure can smell smoke. Lets put out this fire.
