John Henrik Clarke 20th Century Griot

Full story: www.africawithin.com

The life of John Henrik Clarke exemplifies those values upon which the victorious movement of our people depends. His work and his character together have created a symbol that inspires greatness. Born in rural Union Springs, Alabama, he was reared in Columbus, Georgia at a time when American racism was not subtle, but overtly oppressive. His intellectual curiosity and initiative were resources which allowed him to circumvent the authorities In a society which denied to people of African descent library privileges which those of European descent enjoyed. This proved to be the beginning of a productive life in which there would be countless hours spent In libraries all over the world. In these early days research into the African past was indeed an uphill struggle for several reasons:

It is such a good feeling to be able to quote "a scholar" who is one of OUR OWN.

Not only may you rest in peace Dr. John Henrik Clarke...BUT IN GLORY!

We still call on you, we have yet to know the depths of knowledge you left for us.

GREAT article, and a GREAT man. He is truly one of the most intelligent writers and speakers that MORE of our people need to learn about. He might not have been as popular as Martin Luther King Jr. because you have to open books in order to learn about these guys. You couldn't just turn on a television or a radio and hear about them. You have to READ (something we don't do enough of!!!). In my humble opinion he had a LOT more to offer than almost anyone else as far as what he was capable of mentally. I respect Clarke, W.E.B. Dubois and J.A. Rogers the MOST out of all of the great black leaders because of this! Buy his books on amazon.com and check out his many recorded interviews and speeches on youtube.

Yeah you are right. Shoot! where do we start? The debate he had with Martin Benal vs that biatch Mary leftowitz, how he started, his foreword for Michael Bradley's book; The Iceman Inheritance...good read.

I liked his talks about the Civil Rights movement, in how there was this woman who was considered to be the one who would protest and sit at the front of the bus but she was not chosen because her character was in question.

Or the way African society lived day to day before the colonizers...to name just a few.

i couldn't begin to tell you the things that I've learned from this man's mind. However least we not forget what I think is his greatest accomplishment, those he left behind which I don't think would be as we know them today. People like Marimba Ani, Molefi Asante, Van Sertima, Hillard (Ancestor), and Jacob Curruthers..along with many, more...

"We see in his life his achievement that the system" academic or otherwise must not be allowed to define our standards or to limit our horizons.

His life demonstrates to us what can be accomplished outside of the system as well.

It says that we must always determine our own symbols, images and values. We must build our own institutions, and value them"

great article

Also, The Iceman Inheritance good book!

I know this may come out wrong, but I don't know how else to tell you...If I began, I must first get through this:

Local Favorites:

And ye shall know that I am in the midst and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed
----------

Do you have any idea the energy and time it would take to cleanse your mind and soul of that blockage so his words can mean something to you instead of your trying to fit them into your own paradigm?

I know one of Dr.Clarke's followers or proteges is Booker T. Coleman, an educator the man is tight!!!

I have quite a few videos of Dr. Clarke's lectures when Sister Bert had her cable slot in New York, lo and behold some of the videos I have are now on Youtube.

For Inisa Love

This was featured on Tony Brown's Journal where I first saw it here is the 1st part one of many topics Dr. Clarke covers: http://www.youtube.com/watch...

I acutally met Dr. Clarke at a lecture at Norfolk state university in 1995. He was a brilliant man, i even took a picture with him. He amazed me as he threw out facts and knowledge for a good hour with no notes. He was blind when I met him and his intellect really impressed me.
