The mayor considers anyone who disagrees with him a racist. His interest is not in democratic city government, but in himself. He is affraid that the inner city vbters are beginning to see him for what he is: an ineffective bully.

I don't understand why, when you speak the truth factually you get labeled a racist by people like perez. His lack of leadership, control and fortitude uncovers his inability to keep hartford under control .

what will he do when the temperature hits 90.

Perez needs to understand that this is America. Americans have a little freedom of speach left. He must be a Democrat? Perez has been pretty useless in Hartford and it reflects on the problems we read everyday in Hartford. Read the latest Census report on Hartford and the crime stats.Next Perez may want to censor that. Besides; Read the arrests on surrounding towns and see where they are from, What a surprise, Hartford! Get off your high horse Perez you may fool the people of Hartford but others see how useless you are as Mayor,The problem is we all have to pay for your lack of leadership.

Why not Start a Hartford Fourum and get some input from your residents.

Perez, Look at the Park St hit and Run, That went world wide and it reflects OUR state...

Is the term "barbarian" considered racist, or is this just another not terribly well written story?

If you can only write positive things about Hartford, Hartford's Mayor and department director's this thread will vanish. Criticism is good, not bad, we all learn from it.

a little nervous there? eddy.? AS DIRTY AS IT CAN GET. free speech riding upon the world wide web is the begining of the end for public corruption in connecticut. report connecticut public corruption, abuse of power, judicial fraud,or any other individual or collective unlawful governmental conduct to the investigative arm of congress at fraudnet@gao.gov or just post it right here. mayor perez if you can not protect the people in hartford from state public services corruption and massive, daily, yearly, trafficking of dangerous drugs then you need help. the people of hartford need justice via broad sweeping reform in governmental services.

Please good people of Connecticut. We are trying to find constructive solutions for what ails Hartford.
Disruptive discourse, racially derogatory remarks, mean-hearted missives, and unpleasant epistles do little to assuage the day-to-day difficulties of our beautiful residents.
We must find a new tack, and act quickly to attack at the root of our community's recidivism. We believe that it starts with a change in attitude. If people would kindly only write happy thoughts on this board, only bring shiny new cars in to the city, and remain well-dressed with a smile on when they enter our fair city, then a new attitude will spring forth from all the dismay. If we stop talking about the problems and stop looking for them, then they will go away.

What he is telling you is that calling him out for his lack of leadership embarrasses him more than his lack of leadership should embarrass you. How self-serving and pathetic is this guy!

There needs to be a version of Godwin's Law for screaming racism.

Just because you don't like what you hear, simply calling a group of people racists is no argument. You lose Eddie Perez.

Hartford is like Beirut?

Actually not. Hartford has had 90 shootings so far this year.

Beirut is probably the safer place to live.

What's interesting here is the amount of effort expended by city pols to spin the media and control the message.

If Hartford is so safe, then why are the State Police being deployed there?

Why are the Hartford pols trying to make excuses for the apathy and uncaring attitude of the residents?

Why is the state govt doing so little to try to influence the events in our capital city?

Building a convention center and science center apparently does not remove the thugs from the streets.

Maybe we need the Army patrolling the streets of Hartford. After all, they have plenty of experience from Iraq in how to deal with terrorists.

Desperate times require desperate measures.

The Mayor is off-base with his "demand." It will be a scary new day when any politician or government can urge a newspaper to filter or censor the comments of private citizens because he does not like what they have to say.

The Courant does not control Topix, and Topix' terms of service are already quite complete and fully adequate. Here's a link: http://www.topix.com/topix/terms

The right of free speech extends to the right make stupid or irresponsible statements. I personally would like to see a little more courtesy on the boards. But that should come from the users, not from editors, censors, or the government.

The Mayor's best bet is to see that people don't have any valid reason to compare Hartford to Beirut, or to compare its residents to barbarians. In that regard, he has a lot of work to do.

i like the forums because it is more like a man on the street poll. it also is linked to all the other tribune newspapers nationwide and it is interesting to get opinions from afar. the hard copy newspaper opinion section can be politically influenced in many ways. the negativity will hurt eddie as well as the marketing budget to bring conventions and visitors to hartford.

Despite that disclaimer, there are TONS of posts (hiding under the cloak of anonymity or white sheets) that are UNBELIEVABLY racist, sexist, homophobic and classist. AND despite the "report this", those posts remain. So, whether or not I agree with the Mayor on his policies, etc., I'm totally with him on this one.
