This would have been a great time to use the Taser. I don't think the Death Penalty fits the crime in this case. Do they not have Tasers?

Hey bbj,
I will take the knife and you get the taser, then we will see who get their balls cut off. Know what you are talking about before you open your mouth.

The cops saved the taxpayers the expense of a trial and incarceration. This is a great case of blue justice. Unfortunately or the cops they have to deal with all of the bull that will be spewed on them. I bet the rape victim is happy with the outcome.

Once again, I am totally amazed at these comments about how the cops were in such danger, had to take control of the situation, etc. The guy had a KNIFE, for chrissakes. If he had a gun, their lives would defintely have been in danger, and shooting him would have been justified. They had him surrounded, they all had guns, he had a knife. Where is the real danger here? It doesn't matter what he may have been guilty of doing prior to this; he had a knife, they had GUNS.

To "Visitor" and all others who don't understand deadly use of force, the police had every right to use deadly force in this circumstance. You speak from ignorance not understanding the legal concepts of deadly force or the application of those tactics and apply your emotions that don't mean a thing. I would strongly suggest you never pull a knife on police either or you too will be shot center mass to stop the threat to the police officers.

All I want to know is if the Cops used Lead, Copper Jacketed, or the Copper Jacketed Hollow Points. Just for future use!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about Hartford. The thing is in practically every department SOME officers have tasers. Not all do as the weapons are expensive, more so than handguns, and every year departments try to add more tasers to the force in their annual budget. Let's assume (I hate that word) for a minute that the officer had a taser. In the initial chase he probably would have a gun pulled out, not knowing what the suspect had. So if he finds the suspect has a knife does he ask the suspect to pause while he holsters his weapon, and then pulls out a taser?

Sorry obvious, but you've been watching too many Dirty Harry movies. Real life shooting is not likethat.

Unbelievable!!! I suppose the police should have asked him to stand still and hold out his leg so they could have shot him a little bit until he dropped the knife.

I'm curious, why did you leave out the part about him threatening the Troopers and about refusing commands to drop the knife? Of course, your way makes it sound better for those who want to believe this guy was a "poor victim" They should have waited until he got closer to stab one of them first, or tried to shoot him in the hand. It would have been easy to do after a high speed chase of a rape and bank robbery suspect. You probably do it all the time. Which one hour cop show did you get this from? Perhaps all cops should now carry knives to even the playing field. That way cops won't ever have the upper hand. Then you'll be happy!

Yes, he had a knife. Troopers had guns. Scumbag told repeatedly to drop the knife. He refused. Moral of the story.. When cops give you a lawful order, obey it. Choose not to and suffer the consequences. I repeat what I said in pervious post. He was a POS (Piece of S---). Troopers did society a huge favor.

OK, I won't get sarcastic now. Visitor, go outside, count off two seconds and at the same time run. How much distance did you cover? Now assuming that you were shot during those two seconds you will be surprised to know that the initial shots don't STOP people, their inertia carries them a distance, still with knife in hand. Many experts have done studies to figure out what a safe distance is when it comes to confronting someone with a knife.

He wasn't "surrounded", that would be poor planning on the troopers part, they would endanger each other.

Moral of the story is to leave the investigation to the experts. The answer will be determined by them, not here.

let's see - two cops holding guns on the subject - warning issued to drop the knofe - while on cop maintains a shoot to kill bead, the other aims for a leg and takes the disabling shot. Seems like a reasonable training scenario to teach at the academy.
