"The salary increase is indicative of our confidence." Although it took the board less than five minutes to approve the raise, members said the process that brought them there took months.

How fortunate that for $181K, the Super is lucky enough to work in a place where parents are willing and able to reteach or hire tutors if the schools fail to do their jobs. Parents hire tutors, tests scores go up, superintendent gets the credit, salaries go up all around, parents keep picking up the tab and the pieces.

I've seen this pattern before.

Whatever happened to saving money? The present day economy is in a slump and yet the Board feels the need to give hefty raises! Wish we all made that kind of money!$181K wouldn't that be nice.

That's crazy. Cops and Fireman who risk their lives everyday can't even get close to 3 percent and a super gets 4.5%. There's something wrong here. Citizens need to wake up and give the right people the proper raises.

Come one... Where in the H.... are we going with public pay checks. This is Stupid.. What does she do for $181K? The Officers and volunteer firemen, what do they get to help our town. how about the volunteers that sit on our boards and commissions? what do they get? Some work at the commisions as if it were a full time job... When is this going to stop... Let her go.. Find someone else cheaper.. who wants Simsbury on their resume...
A tired old tax payer of Simsbury.
P.S. did Mary Glassman get a 4.5% increase in her paycheck?

I agree with those about firemen/policemen, THEY should be the ones with the raises, not the one who already makes a ton of money. I'd be embarrassed accepting that and making it public knowing it is way too much.

I don't want to hear the schools need money for this or that, have them see the Superintendent, she can write a check to the school board for a new roof!

We can't AFFORD any more teachers so our classrooms are huge but we can afford to pay ONE PERSON over $180K? I don't get it.

This is appalling. We underwrite her foreign travel, squeeze the teachers, and overload the classrooms. Simsbury schools are a joke, a facade. And Diane is evil.

Hey, why don't you all move to West Hartford. No better yet, have your school Super move here, she will fit right in. I'm told that's why everyone moves here "the great schools you know". What a joke (but the lids going to blow pretty soon).

The brothers of the thin blue line appreciate your point, but most of us are union and that grates against those type of raises for most town governments.

Wow.$181K a year is "competitive" for a position that comes with staff, paid vacation, health, pension, and Lord knows what else? Wow.

We had to fight to get another teacher for my child's grade so they wouldn't have 27-28 kids, and she gets a 4.2% raise? Most of us are fighting for 3%. That's nuts.

nice raise. perhaps the board should return to math class to learn the concept of how percentages are not the same for those in the middle class who are funding this insanity.

4.5% at $174K (her old pay) is a $7830 raise, bringing her to about her new level of $181K.

Compare that to the guy next door earning $60K (if he could get a 4.5% raise.) At the same 4.5%, the guy next door gets $2700 for a raise.

This is how our classes are being seperated into only two, the wealthy and the poor. The middle class is being wiped out. It just doesn't make sense to give someone at this level a 4.5% raise when the guy next door, even if he were to get it, can't keep pace with the increase.

$181,047, plus $5,000 to her retirement account. Now it makes perfect sense why the Town would not budget on lowering our taxes by a small amount, in the hopes that it would help this Small Business to stay afloat.

I'm taking nothng away from Diane Ullman and her job performance, please do not read that into this post.

But, at some point, you have to wonder what the powers to be in Simsbury are thinking, or better yet, not thinking.

It's an outrageous case of the government sector being completely out of touch with the real world. I think that private sector workers (a doctor, auditor or an actuary) could probably do the job of a school super, and the reverse is doubtful. My point is that this pay package is out of line with the demands of this job (no insult intended to the super - you have a sweet, sweet gig).

Truer words were never spoken. The ONLY reason this school system ranks well is because of both parents largely being college educated themselves, and working with their kids. The SHS teachers are mediocre at best, and everyone knows it. What a shameful scam.

Parents work (both parents in MANY households to make ends meet) to pay high taxes and pay for tutors to keep our kids grades up so Simsbury school district looks good so our Super can make too much money and parents are broke.
