Thousands Gather At Capitol 'Tea Party' To Protest Federal Spen...

Full story: Hartford Courant

An anti-bailout, anti-stimulus "tea party" at the state Capitol in Hartford on Wednesday drew an estimated crowd of 3,000 to protest what they consider excessive government spending on the day that many Americans pay their federal and state taxes.

Well it sure seems that the Govt has lost touch with the very people it is to serve. The Govt survives on our tax money in turn we all work very hard to earn. I dont care what political party you belong to, This affects us all. Never in the history of this nation has the Govt been so reckless with our money. Generations will pay for this even kids of Liberals. If you have a job - You Pay.

Its about time someone speaks for middleclass hardworking Americans like you and me. Its not, all about the wealthy it seems.

If you look at the Bush years they started it and now Obama is carrying the torch.

All good points.

I thought that GWB was an OK President except for the fact that he spent too much.

I think that there is a real difference between GWB and BHO. BHO wants to recast America into a socialist society. Notice their different approaches to the TARP. GWB used the TARP money to stabilize the banks whereas BHO is using the TARP money to tell the banks what to do - in effect running them - and will not allow the banks to repay the money early.

I was at the New Haven Tea Party yesterday and it was electrifying. I was really moved by the heartfelt and unscripted speeches (no teleprompters) that many Americans there gave and realized that I am not alone in the quest for lower taxes and less government.

As for groups like Connecticut Voices For Children, if Connecticut tax policy does not change soon, there will not be any funding for the 'Children' as all of the producers will have left the state.

Great scene and turnout at the Hartford capitol building yesterday. A couple of things the reporter did not point out:
- Energy was far and away, highest and loudest on the "Dump Chris Dodd" chants.
- The attendance was easily a moving target. The crowd continued to grow from noon for another 45 minutes or so until it covered almost the whole front lawn. Unfortunately the organizers aren't used to speaking to a crowd like this and the PA gear wasn't quite up to it. Lefties know how to do this stuff better.
- I didn't see any ACORN-related people or even counter-protesters. I also didn't see any evidence of ANYONE being bussed in for it. Much less bussed in & paid for by government grants.
- The entire crowd - not the speakers - was videotaped by a very large (like, built like a defensive end) and very obvious Capitol police officer standing on a balcony. No disclosure was made whether he was videotaping this for security purposes or on behalf of his public employee union.
- The TV camera people in the crowd got some jeers and derision. I imagine that's a different experience than they normally get when they cover an event. This crowd really didn't seem to care whether they'd appear on TV or not, and that's unusual.

Thank you for being such a clear spokesman for the Liberal Agenda.

Dude, there were easily more than 300 people there than an hour BEFORE it started.

Love it or leave it! That was the common refrain that many on the left heard for the past 40+ years from those of the conservative-right wing factions. Well, I say, Love it or leave it!

I stayed until the end of the rally where the organizers announced that the state police had estimated the attendance at 5,000. It was great to see so many stand up and make their voices heard.

Anyone who has objectively analyzed the Fair Tax proposal understands its adoption will have everyone paying their fair share of the tax bill and significantly improve the standard of living for the economically depresses members of our community.

It will also almost eliminate the influence exercised by all the special interests seeking special tax treatment by politicians.

Where was this whipped up opposition during the Bush years, during the largest expansion of the federal government and deficit spending since the New Deal?

The right wing has been using fear tactics on the airwaves since the current President WON the ELECTION. This is just their way of protesting a democratic (small D) outcome by whipping up people on artificial issues. There is not a person out there right or left who WANTS to see an increase in their taxes.

However, just as Government spending alleviated the suffering of the middle class and poor during the Great Depression, this Government needs to prepare for the same. For those who point to WWII as the way we got out of the Depression, just remember our WWII industrial build-up was the largest public spending and nationalization that we ever saw, and America emerged as the strongest nation on Earth.

I strongly support those who exercise their right to public protest but condemn in the strongest possible terms the fear mongering used by the right wing to mobilize people.

No problem, pal. But first you don't mind if the government takes back the police, firefighters, roads, parks, bridges, schools, and social security checks your tax dollars are being "wasted" on, do you?

I mean, anything else would be hypocrisy, right?

James H,
The list of essential government expenditures you cite are a mere pittance compared to the amount of money they tax and spend, and please don't forget the huge deficits. If that were all the gov spent OUR money on, we would be in fine shape. But the roads are full of potholes, the bridges are crumbling, the schools are a sad joke as the dropout rate is a disaster. And as far a Social Security, I'm 36 years old, the notion that SS will be there when I retire makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time, because it will be long gone.

Regarding the Capitol Police having the temerity to videotape yesterday's event:

Perhaps this was done because the officer in question was doing his job, protecting the State Capitol grounds and all those who choose to use it? Or is that too much of a waste of tax dollars, too? Should we stop "wasting" taxpayers money on police protection? What else? Firefighters? Roads? Fixing bridges?

What's fascinating to me is all of these little events yesterday were held on public grounds (parks, government property, etc.) Places paid for by taxpayers and provided to the people - to ALL the people - for free. If not for public tax dollars, none of these little events would have happened yesterday.

Nope, nothing disigenuous about that.

Isn't it fascinating that the citizens were outside protesting and the "consultants" were inside saying we aren't taxed enough. Enough already. When there is a deficit - cut expenses. I believe the correct response on finding yourself in a hole is to stop digging.

Pete, I guess you forgot your meds again...But Peter, aside from being angry about being named after a specific male body part, you don't have to act like one...However, if you want a Conservative to take a crack at, try me! I'd be sooo happy to oblige! Do you have Health Insurance?

Do you have a point to make???

Take a look at the type of people in that crowd...These are the taxpayers! As opposed to ACORN protesters acting like terrorists going to private homes on buses paid for with Government Grant money...

These were working taxpaying Americans voicing their dissent with the way the Government has been wasting and spending money! Definitely a group of true heroes!
