Shawn.. until these religious genocidal murderers actually ADMIT this problem it will never go away. They can hide thier heads in the sand and hope to holy hell the bible will keep them safe.. but as we all know the bible is NOT a vaccine nor is it a condom. Until then those communities will suffer and die because of the ignorance and bigotry.. the RC church is most likely the biggest offender!

What a ridiculous generalization. It's an individual's responsibility to take every precaution possible to prevent contracting ANY STD. If a person is too ignorant to do this, que sera, sera.

African American women have the highest rate of new cases. Grampy wrote: <quoted text> Reread the article. Which group is leading in HIV proliferation within our country? All you hear out of the religious rights mouth is that's it's "god's punishment for homosexuals" or "it's a gay disease".. now tell me THAT isn't the case and they never said that.

Great post, you absolutely have it right. And the "war on drugs" isnt helping anything either. Shawn M Lang wrote: While the recent data should be a awake up call for all gay men; the article reports that the steepest increase in AIDS cases is among young, black men who have sex with other men. Many of these men do not consider themselves gay which make it difficult to reach them through traditional gay-focused prevention efforts given the cultural barriers and community homophobia. The data also needs to be viewed cautiously for a few reasons. First, they're talking about AIDS cases, NOT new HIV infections. There was a 12% increase in the 13 - 24 year old group which means that the vast majority were infected when they were teens. There are very few CDC "approved" prevention interventions for young men of color who have sex with other men. AIDS service organizations can't use federal prevention funds for anything other than the DEBIs (Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions) which limits who they can reach and how. Schools for the most part do NOT offer comprehensive sexuality education and only provide the one-shot "sex ed" in health class. Second, it's data from 33 states which doesn't allow for a thourough analysis. Not all states have what's considered mature HIV/AIDS data which, according to the CDC and HRSA is 5+ years of names-based reporting; so the data referred to in the article is limited. The only way to know your own status is to get tested. The state funded testing and counseling sites offer free, confidential or anonymous testing, and includes a risk assessment and risk reduction information.

During the time when the previous pope visited Africa, he spent time in Lesotho (where they built a pavilion just for his visit). Lesotho has the third highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world and close to 100,000 children orphaned by AIDS. He told people not to use condoms.

So would you say the RC church is helping the spread of HIV/AIDS by "guilting" people out of using condoms? If so, isn't it helping prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS by "guilting" people into abstinence? I'm genuinely interested in your perspective.

Any person or organization that doesn't support the use of condoms as a viable prevention strategy is indeed contributing to the spread of HIV and other STIs. I support comprehensive sexuality education which includes abstinence but believe that if people choose to have sex then condoms should be part of a responsible plan. Ronald Reagan (how I shudder at even writing that name...) contributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS when, during his presidency (such as it was), he didn't even speak the word until 7 years into it. During that time, hundreds of thousands died. It wasn't until his own friend, Rock Hudson went public that he uttered the word. We might not be in as bad a mess as we are had he acted from the begining.

The statistics on HIV diagnoses in this country are limited and should be viewed with caution because (as I mentioned previously)a number of states, including CT, have not had HIV names-reporting for a long enough period of time to be considered mature data. We're (the US) probably another 3 - 5 years out before we have mature enough data to analyze to really see where the trends are.
For ex:, in CT 70% of chalmydia cases occur in youth between the ages of 15 -24; and 13% of new AIDS (not HIV) cases were reported in young people under 29 (which means most were infected as teens). We're not reaching our youth with age-appropriate, medically accurate comprehensive sex ed. It's the first line of defense in HIV prevention.

In St.Petersburg FL a doctor was fired for releasing info that 50% of Black males in South St Pete were HIV positive. The number was accurate, but it wasn't Politically Correct. It is the liberals that fight the dissemination of truth about AIDS. The hip-hop generation will be known as the HIV-genital wart generation.

You are wrong. The article's title is misleading. The first paragraph talks of new HIV infections, as does most of the rest of the article. It says in paragraph three that it appears to confirm impressions that a "second-wave" AIDS epidemic is underway. Meaning the new HIV positive test results make it look like it will eventually lead to a new AIDS epidemic.

With 70% of children born to single moms, the promiscuity rate is very high, and the fidelity rate is very low. Even though AIDS itself is difficult to transmit heterosexually, when other STDS are present, it opens the door for AIDS. Too many people are dieing of stupid.

The same time they realize tha the only way to increase your intelligence quotient is with a lobotomy...
