When Patrick Henry Field was just that...a field and Kiln Creek and the whole stretch of Jefferson Avenue from J. Clyde to Denbigh was nothing but marsh land?

OK

NO more houses - oh excuse me, do away w/ houses. start tearing them down

Population control - less then 2 children per couple

SO, we need less houses for our children. then we can start tearing down and create more fields

ALSO - from now on, no one is allowed to move to NN - then tear down more houses and - viola - more fields!!!

AND - I do not want my children to do well -'cause,'cause, oh my gosh they may make some money and turn into - gasp - "high-faloooters"

This is normal - I'VE got mine! I just want you to keep paying taxes on land YOU own and keep it in trees for MY benefit!!

sort of like eminent domain for your own personal benefit ain't it

Obama_gal - says,[the 'high-faloooters stuff aside]

"Wish theyd turn Kiln Creek back into a field."

AND THEN

"We need more housing for ALL peoples."

care to reconcile those 2 thoughts?

OR should we just bulldoze Kiln Creek and build apartments.

OH, but we still would not have a field

what the f#(k !? are you talking about?

What is now Nettles Dr was the original Warwick Blvd. Warwick was 2 lanes all the way to the James City County line. and beyond
Rt. 60 went to Andersen corner [in James City County] and took a left and was the road to Richmond before there was a I-64
Used to play in the woods between Yates and the graveyard before there was what is now Warwick Blvd. There was a small lake to the west of Yates where I never caught a fish.
WOW - I now feel old

Great reading all these comments about the old Newport News - brings back fond memories

As a paperboy in the late 60's had my newspaper bundles delivered to the front of the KAYO gas station at the corner of Dresden Drive and Jefferson Ave. KAYO is now a 7-11.

KAYO: now 7-11

Proctor's Amoco (corner Harpersville & Jefferson): now Soap n Suds

Florida Orange Store (Jeff. Ave near Harpersvile): now Dunkin Donuts

The bar in the basement across from W&M was called "The Rainbow's End".

I played "Colt League" baseball at Deer Park with a guy named Jimmy Jones - Same guy?

Speaking of "steamed-up windows", don't forget Merry Point.

A few bars that are gone, but not forgotten:
Ed's Oyster bar in Hilton
The Casbah in Hidenwood (the site of Todd Stadium)
The Railway Station (on Warwick Blvd. across from the Daily Press)
Ray Adam's Place,Later Called Hilton Country Club.(Not sure if it is still open, I heard the Adam's family sold the business some years ago)

More places gone but not forgotten:
Deer Park Market
Coates & Clark Zipper Plant (On Jefferson at Briarfield)
The two Foozeball places named "Joe Fooze".(one was on Warwick across from Ferguson and the other was on Jefferson next to the Anchor Drive-In)
The local "head-shop"chain: "Here And Now Limited" (One was located on the corner of Jefferson & Main., burned down when the paint store next door caught fire)
The four theaters in downtown NN: The Palace, The Paramount, The James & The Warwick.
La Vogue women's clothing store, originally downtown, but later relocated to Warwick Shopping Center.
The "Orioles Club", an after-hours club located on Warwick Blvd. near the Daily Press.
The original Riverside Hospital. I was born there and I understand that it has finally been torn down.

Wow! Dale Pennington was an awesome pedal steel guitar player in Sutter's. Clarence Munden played bass and has been with a band called Out In The Cold for many years.. I am listening to Sutter's Gold Streak as I type this. Snuff was another good local band and the fiddle player Cecil Hooker used to play with Shania Twain. Jim Boling , Snuff's guitar player died a few years ago. Super Grit Cowboy Band still tours and they still sound awesome. I was with Boot Hill Express for a few years and our fiddle player Greg Thompson has played at the Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach for many years. Greg went to Menchville. Our guitar player Doc Hearl is an emmy award winning producer in Nashville. He still plays an incredible guitar, dobro, harmonica, and steel pan drum. Other good bands of that time were Breckinridge, Street Talk, and the Dixie Road Ducks. Boot Hill Express played at the Railway Station a couple of times and a few times at the White Oaks Lodge in Hampton but we spent most of out time in Norfolk, Va Beach and all over North Carolina. There were some mighty fine outdoor concerts in those days too. If I remember correctly Bill Snyder ran the Railway Station.
My name is Brett. I am a Dial. Im son of Mike Dail and Grandson of Kenny Dail, The Steel Guitar Player of hampton roads. Just figured i would see if anyone sees this and care to discuss anything about Boothill Express (Mike Dial was the drummer and Kenny was Steel Player). I like talking about everything my dad did before and after i was introduced into this world. Email me at lockdownx99@yahoo.com. thanks.

Ya know,The station that I listened to in Jr. College, the one that signed-off with ELO was the one that was located in Moyock. With my memory being what it is, lol,I just assumed it was WNOR. I seem to recall that the station listed it's location as both Moyock, NC and Great Bridge (or Suffolk).

Not to be picky, but it was HecHingers. My friend worked there just before it closed.

Anyone remember the Virginia Cafeteria in Newmarket South? What about Youngland? That's where my Mother bought all my clothes when I was small.

There was one on Mercury too. I couldn't wait to get there to get the fish and chips. And the "men" behind the counter were full of laughter and such great attitudes. They were fun to watch! We had a bottle of the malt vinegar in the frig forever!
I may be wrong, but wasn't that somewhere in the vicinity of Sinclair Circle?

OK, who remembers King's Department Store? I think it was turned into that flea market (King Flea?) on Jefferson that used to be the Greyhound and is now the site of the new police station there. Was there a Farm Fresh there also? I remember a big sign with a blonde-haired, freckle-faced boy who wore a straw hat and had a hayseed in his mouth.

The main thing I remember about that place (King's or Farm Fresh?) was that the groceries were put in little carts and rolled outside on a track made of metal skate-like wheels and you had a plastic number that matched the cart. When you pulled your car around you matched your number to the cart and retrieved your groceries. I was little and always wanted to ride in that cart.

Also Giant Open Air was one of my favorites because I loved to play around in that blast of air when you walked in that door.

And Big Star? I think there was one of those around also.

<quoted text>Yep, that's what they were. I lived in the trailer park for a short time and had a male wire haired terrier who loved to jump the fence or shall I say climb. One day he went missing and I called the SPCA and they told me that the security guard at the airport was chasing him on the airstrip and was gonna shoot him if he could. He'd been chasing him for about an hour. The SPCA said they tried and couldn't catch him. I ran over there to see and my dog was climbing the tall fence to get back out. The guard just stood there shaking his head as my dog jumped into my arms from the fence. He told me he was gonna shoot him if he came over there again so I made sure he didn't. He was actually chasing the small airplanes taking off.
That is so funny! I can see the look on the Guard's face now!

My Mom lived in that trailer park (Patrick Henry Trailer Park) when she was expecting me. They were stationed at Fort Eustis.

My grandaddy used to work at the Apples Auto off of 17, worked there for like 30 yrs..Granny worked for A & P for 25 yrs even when it turned to Superfresh. Miss the days. I read all of the memories from the 50's and 60's and wish I could have been there..
Which A&P did your Granny work at? My Mom worked at the A&P in Newmarket forever and also at Superfresh.

I would love to see pictures of the 1960 or 1961 Warwick Jr High Football team as I played and letter on the team. I moved away to Norfolk in the spring and didn't get a chance to buy a year book. Would love to see pictures of myself back then. I'm currently 63 and live in Va Beach, Va. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
