Poquoson restricts off-road vehicle access near Messick Point

Full story: Hampton Roads Daily Press

Windsurfers and kayakers who favor a popular Poquoson launching spot at Messick Point are paying the price for damage caused by four-wheelers. About two weeks ago, Poquoson officials restricted vehicular access to a grassy knoll situated on the Back River due to deep ruts left by off-road vehicles.

first off they arnt "bull island punks" just kids trying to have fun. Unless you know who they are and what damage they do, dont talk about them in that manner. Second, if they would stop shutting down all the places around here for them to go mudding or as they call it "off roading" then they wouldnt have to mess up other property. Just chill they will just find somewhere else to go now. No big deal.

These same also spend time rutting along easements, ripping up the Yorktown battlefield, tearing up the Newport News Parks, cutting doughnuts on tennis courts and ballfields. In York County they tear up the boat ramps. Numerous utility easements have been rutted up so badly maintenance vehicles can't get in to fix problems. Another is ripping up railroad easements and pump station lawns.

Rest assured the police are looking for these 4x4's. Unfortunately, alot of legitimate RV'ers and taxpayers will pay the price for a few morons.

If you see this, call the police.

These repairs cost alot of money for some kids to have fun.

....they wouldn't have to mess up other property? Meaning property that wasn't meant for 4x4s to ride but they go there anyway? I agree there isn't many areas around here to go for that but it doesn't mean go where you want to either. I am always amazed how people damage other people's property like it's no big deal, not their fault.

Parents need to inspect their vehicles that their "children" are driving for damage and/or mud. I've seen regular cars at Messick Point on many occassions doing donuts up on the hill. The drivers are teenagers in their parents cars.

The whole thing is unfortunate, yet all it does is gives those of us who responsibly use our offroad vehicles a bad name. I am associated with several different offroad clubs and forums, and in each case, one of the requirements of membership is to complete the tread lightly! awareness course, which emphasizes leaving no mark on the environment.
Check it out for yourself and remember, next time you see an offroad vehicle covered in mud, it might not be a punk kid, but a responsible adult that was out enjoying their hobby in a controlled environment. And just for the record, the story above was almost certainly not one of us.

God forbid there is a forum regarding Poquoson without some moron bringing up Poquoson's "drug problem". Get a life. This thread is about 4-wheeler damage at Messick Point.

No rising blood pressure here. I just find it irritating that every time there is a forum about Poquoson, someone finds it necessary to bring up the drug problem here. Maybe its all tied in? Doubt it.

One good hurricane and most of the peninsula is gone...

Ignore decadent - his kind are one of the many jealous neighbors on the peninsula that continue to berate Poquoson based on petty differences. Take it as a compliment and laugh at him.
