Most would agree that our nation is currently in a socio-economic mess. Many of my fellow conservatives blame it on Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton .

Gloom and Doom Gloom and Doom - that's what I'm sick of hearing from the GOP - and just incase you missed it - that's what the majority of the voting American people are tired of too. Come up with a viable plan that doesn't include ignoring the problem.

Jim A. Callis,

I fully agree with your statement "I have had enough finger-pointing".

The problem is you provide no solution - you continue to contribute to the problem by using statements like "The Obama administration does not want to understand this". It is not possible to know what other people want or think.

I think we can agree that both parties have had administrations which have made bad policy choices.

What we need is consensus among the American people on policies which will work for everyone. Continuing to argue to gain an advantage over others rather than trying to solve the problems is non-productive in my opinion.

We need to agree on some basic goals for government and select some policies to achieve those goals.

OK. Fair enough. Here's 35 ideas.

1. Let Free Markets work.
2. No bailouts.
3. No borrowing from unsuspecting children.
4. Dismantle the Departments of Education, Commerce, and Agriculture.
5. Balance the Federal Budget with nothing "off the books."
6. Raise the retirement age on Social Security.
7. Repeal Medicare Part D
8. Get Social Security and Medicare on a sound actuarial footing.
9. Phase out "The Farm Bill" over three years.
10. Replace the income tax with a national retail sales tax.
11. Eliminate government "insurance programs" (e.g., Flood Insurance, Government-insured student loans, and Crop Insurance). Let the farmers, students, and people living at the water's edge buy insurance in the private sector.
12. Eliminate foreign aid and let churches, service organizations (e.g., ROTARY) and charities assess who is and who is not deserving, and deliver the aid based on voluntary contributions.
13. Eliminate the Ethanol program. It is, and always has been, a boondoggle.
14. Turn education over to the world of private enterprise with all students getting school vouchers.
15. Eliminate lotteries. The government has no business in the gambling business.
16. Term limits for members of congress.
17. Require that congress state its constitutional authority for any proposed legislation.
18. Require that members of congress read legislation before voting.(The "Read the Bills Act" is available at www.downsizedc.org ).
19. Let's remind ourselves that just because the majority of the voters think something is a good idea, doesn't make it a good idea.
20. Eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts and the taxpayer subsidy for NPR.
21. Audit the FED, and then dismantle it.
22. Eliminate Fannie and Freddie and repeal the Community Reinvestment Act.
23. Get the government out of the business of lending people money. These decisions are based on politics and not credit-worthiness.
24. Reduce the number of Federal Holidays to: July 4th, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving and then add one: make David Crosby's birthday a national holiday (just checking to see if you were reading).
25. Eliminate bilingual education and bilingual government forms
26. Enforce our borders and prosecute illegal immigrants.
27. Eliminate disability payments for people with ADHD and bipolar disorder.
28. Repeal legislation that makes you a registered voter, simply because you got a driver's license.
29. Limit the census questions to the original two or three.
30. Repeal asset forfeiture laws.
31. Repeal warrantless wiretapping and sneak-and-peak.
32. Walter Williams for Secretary of the Treasury
33. Atlas Shrugged is required reading.
34. Nancy Pelosi has to fly commercial or a plane she owns/hires from her own money.
35. Free those people who are in prison because they were caught with small amounts of marijuana.
35. Never again let Rosie O'Donnell sing The National Anthem.

Democrats or republicans, there is no difference when it comes to the size of government. They both use fear to control the American public and increase their scope of power.

The republicans used the threat of additional terrorism to repeal personal rights of citizens, and to continue their campaign of American imperialism.

The democrats are using the current economic downturn (note I did not use the term crisis) to institute socialist policies to make the public even more dependent on the US government, and to nationalize banks and any other company they want.

The end result of all of these wasteful spending policies, instituted by both parties, will be an insolvent federal government. This government will be intricately involved in the everyday lives of the its citizens and wield unconstitutional powers over them because we allow them to. I doubt that even 1/4 of the people of this country have read the US Constitution. So when the day comes that people wonder why they pay exorbitant taxes and are told how to live every part of their lives I will not blame the democrats or republicans. I will blame each and every person of this country for letting this happen.

Scribe,

While I agree with most of your policies, you skipped the step which is causing the political problem. The American people have not agreed on the goals of government.

The free enterprise system is the best economic system devised so far; but, it does not meet the economic needs of all the citizens.

marcaurelius,

Free Markets are naturally biased toward capital. There is limited capital and a great deal of labor. Therefore, labor never feels that they are getting their fair share of the rewards of social organization and technological advances.

They therefore try to use government to improve their position. Thus the current political struggle.

It would be in everyone's best interest to solve this problem.

I think President Bush had two good ideas to address this issue. Make everyone a capitalist. Remove income tax on first $10,000.00 of dividend income and invest the social security premiums (tax) into individual 401k type retirement accounts.

Scribe,

The free market is not working to solve the country's dependence on foreign oil. In order to extend the life of our oil based economy, we should add a gasoline tax to allow the free market to build more fuel efficient transportation; but, the American people do not see this as the best solution. So, we force automobile companies to meet arbitrary mileage guidelines.

The Conservatives HAVE a plan. HAVE HAD a plan. The problem is that Obama and the Democrats are such dyed in the wool socialists that they will never listen. The media is so in the tank for these Democrat losers that the message will never get out. We can't do everything for America. America has to stand up to the idiot Obama and Democrats and say enough of this socialism and welfare and destruction of private industry is ENOUGH! But,,,,50% of the society are just fat, loser, welfare slugs, so what's the point?

This morning, I heard about a very rich man in New York, who paid $13,000 a DAY in taxes, until he heard that his taxes were to be increased. He got so tired of being hated for his success, he decided to move to a low tax state and take his money with him. California is experiencing an exodus of successful people and businesses.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Leo

The atmosphere is highly combustible today, with people getting in a stew over the smallest little thing. You will also have a tendency to get hot under the collar, especially if someone isn't doing things as quickly as you'd like. Try to stop yourself getting in a rage because once that happens it will be difficult to cool down again. Maybe you need some fresh air?
