Group promoting gay 'conversion' settles with Arlington schools...

We've known for more than thirty years now that environmental factors (upbringing) has no bearing on adult sexual orientation and no environmental influences (therapy) can change this inborn characteristic.

Those who promote the "change is possible" mantra through reparative or conversion "therapy" only seek to have those who have same sex attractions deny and repress these natural feelings to conform to their repressive religious beliefs about homosexuality.

These psychologically dysfunctional approaches to same sex attractions can lead to depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behaviors including suicide, especially in school aged children. Due to the harm that almost always results, these "therapies" are highly condemned by all major medical and mental health organizations.

As a former APA member (ret), who has had to repair the damage that these "therapies" do, I would highly recommend that the false hope that "change is possible" not be promoted in the first place, certainly not to children, who are most vulnerable and naive about the harmful effects that these treatments produce.

Oh, good!

Now let's hope the school system gets smart and bans fliers in elementary and middle schools too.

PFOX advocates the equal treatment and the civil rights of people who, on their own, choose to turn from homosexuality and strive to become heterosexual.

It would be nice if the Daily Press would stick to the facts and not silly rubbish passed around as truths by militant gays who have nothing better to do!

I do not understand the pleasure one gets from a same sex relationship. That being said, it is no one's business who another chooses to love. If God deems this a sin, then GOD will handle it, not man. Love who you want, because love trumps hate every time. If my child came out to me, so what? He/she is still my child and there is nothing my child can do to stop me from loving him/her.

When PFOX continually repeats the "change is possible" mantra, how can you say that they are not promoting the "therapies" that make this change possible?

Yet heterosexuals already have the full share of civil rights in this country. It's lesbian and gay couples and their children who don't have the same civil rights that heterosexual couples and their children have. Why would someone who is heterosexual due to some "ex-gay" process need to have their heterosexual "rights" protected any more than someone who is heterosexual by nature?

It's clear from their [url=http://www.pfox.org/more. htm]website[/url] that PFOX is advocating for those who pretend to be heterosexual when they're not. While adults are free to assume any pretence they wish, PFOX's attempt to distribute these delusional and psychologically damaging views to vulnerable school children and must be resisted by those of us who have a professional code of ethical conduct we live by.

This decision is an absolute outrage. The School Board is not taking it's responsibility to the kids seriously, caring only about radical right politics and covering their OWN rears. This "information" is dangerous lies. There is no such thing as an "ex-gay" and the legitimate mental health community has been loud and clear on this fact, saying not only that these "therapies" do NOT work but that they are DANGEROUS and cause harm to those who fall for them.
In addition, promoting the LIE that sexual orientation can be changed is a very clear message to every straight kid in those schools that harrassment of gays is OK, because they CHOOSE to be gay. The damage this lie does to gay kids is unspeakable.
This trash should NOT be distributed in any school, and the members of the school board responsible, if they do not reverse this dangerous and shocking mistake should be immediately recalled by the voters in this district if they give a hoot about what's best for all the children in the district.

By claiming to promote the "civil rights" of those falsely claiming to be "former homosexuals" these groups ABSOLUTELY DO promote these sham therapies, it is the ONLY reason for these groups to exist. The "rights" of the people making this dangerous and false claim haven't been threatened in the least, and the only reason they say otherwise, and promote this fabrication, is so they can send out the message that gays just choose to be gay and can be "cured" with "therapy," all of which is not only false but dangerous.

No gay conversion has ever worked. The founders of Exodus International who claimed to be "ex-gay" well now said oops we lied and are a gay couple.

No one has the right to promote unethical, disproven treatment for conditions that members of the medical and mental health community have found do not even exist.

Non-heterosexual attractions are natural variations in human sexuality that occur in near random fashion for reasons we don't yet understand. These primitive limbic system reactions are not subject to change.

Attempting to produce this change is considered unethical by those of us who have professional standards to maintain. The fact that groups influenced by their religious beliefs have no ethical standards to guide them, doesn't make what they are doing okay.
