I see nothing wrong with young children doing things such as this. I see 6 year olds tearing it up on guitars. BUT any child needs to start off easy with anything like this.

I suspect that it didn't "travel up" like the report said. I bet it pushed him back and he stumbled and shot himself. He probably had a full magazine which was really stupid on the part of the adult who gave it to him.

I have shot many machine guns. I would never start even an adult out with more than three or four rounds in the magazine. They do not travel up much at all unless you are not holding it securely or are half asleep. They do push you back until you counteract it by leaning into it a bit.

This is not a case of a gun hurting someone but rather of an adult making a poor decision. Tragic indeed. My kids, 11 and 6 have only shot a BB gun so far. I'm not in any hurry to get them into something bigger.

Who is stupid enough to allow a child to operate an uzi? Even under adult supervision that is moronic as a gun of that size is way too strong for a child of that size.

Every fired one? They are incredibly heavy and only fire pistol rounds. One of the milder subs in fact.

Yeah, you are probably right. You know what would also be alright? Giving your kids a 13 foot python to play with in addition to the gun.

But you gotta make sure they hold both of them correctly...and never, ever while they are half-asleep.

Haven't fired one actually, was simply under the assumption that it would be too heavy for an 8 yr old to handle, and when fired would be hard for someone of that size to control.

Safety lesson one. Point the firearm AWAY from your head before squeezing the trigger.

This world is so crazy, all these weapons are not necessary. Kids should not even be exposed to these kinds of things. I think that is so ridiculous the way all these events turn out. Everyday somebody dies from such desguisting circumstances. This needs to stop young lives are ending because of the everyday violence and carelessness

ANY weapon is too much for anyone unaccustomed to firing one, especially an 8 year old child. With a little practice he could have learned to handle it just as he was taught to ride a bike without training wheels.

My point was not that every child should be shooting weapons of any kind but that the responsible adult was completely negligent and probably was quite inexperienced himself.

So, what weapons are necessary?

Compare weapons accidents with swimming pool accidents. Hardly a comparison but you don't hear of people wanting to ban swimming pools.

I see nothing wrong with it if it is done responsibly. Obviously this was not done in a responsible manner.

BB gun yes. I have no problem with children learning to shoot with supervision and training. I learned at a young age to shoot with my grandfather training me. I also support the right to own guns.

HOWEVER:

Uzi's are not something a child should be learning how to use. I firmly believe that these types of guns should not be allowed for private ownership to begin with. Military and police I believe should have these types of things.

I gotta laugh at the gun defenders in here.

Your unconscionable defense of a WEAPON shot for fun is just another glimpse into the judgement of the NRA and republican party (not true conservatives).

You people are idiots and there should be prosecutions.

Some believe that about ALL types of firearms. Where do we draw the line?

I could easily support banning of fully automatic weapons since I no longer own any but would that make it right from an individual's rights perspective? No. Therefore I see nothing wrong with responsible ownership. This was not responsible which is something I think I said in the beginning.
