The over-50 exemption was created to give states more time to get everyone new licenses, and officials say the risk of someone in that age group being a terrorist, illegal immigrant or con artist is much less. By 2017, even those over 50 must have a REAL ID-compliant card to board a plane. so i guess as long as i don't fly i don't need the new ID

Good question but I think from the way I understand it, when you renew your license it will be automatic to get the so called "real ID". I also think this is going to cause some problems that will make this get put on the back burner for a while.

Why don't they just make a national driver's license with your state of residence on it. Let the feds fund all these changes that the states have no money to comply with.

From the article:

"Chertoff said that for any state which doesn't seek such a waiver by May, residents of that state will have to use a passport or certain types of federal border-crossing cards if they want to avoid a vigorous secondary screening at airport security."

This is yet another attempt to have more US citizens apply for a US passport. A US passport is nothing more than an a $97 tax on travelers. It will not keep terrorists out of this country.

well it looks like i will be doing more driving in the future. idaho from chicago is only 2.5 days and there was a lot more to see than lines of people cueing up for boarding inspection by overly officious airline employees. we stopped at a car museum in s. dakota and of course at wall drug. we got to see the mountains not from 8 miles high but directly in the face.

get off the plane and really see the usa by car.

This situation doesn't suprise me and it should not surprise anyone who is well read in the Bible.
One day soon each person will have an important decision to make. The Bible promises an ID system that will require something either in your hand or forehead. The only acceptable responce for a christian is a flat no.

Further, what's the big deal? I mean, really?
We already have a license, why do we need one that is issued by the federal government. As suspected, like so many other times, they have snowballed you again. All of the 9/11 hijackers had fake passports. So what makes anyone think these REAL IDS are not going to prevent any further terrorism in this country. I don't believe it would have stopped Mr. Hilton and other ilk like him.

And as for the State of Georgia, what about the 10 year license that now has been issued? What a waste of the taxpayer dollar. Oh, wait what dollar, its almost worth as much as a peso these days.

I am so looking forward to January 2009. When they escort all of these baffoons right out the White House door. And I will feel sorry for the next individual who must have to clean up all of dung left behind.

I know what you are talking about and totally didn't see that until you mentioned it. It is VERY scary. See you on the other side.
