Hello Hammond residents – Could you please protest the fact that 20% of your population lives in poverty, instead of a store opening/closing? Just a suggestion.

As for Carson’s, why wouldn’t they move? Hammond’s median income is 33k vs. Sherriville’s 60k. The home values are drastically different too. Hammond’s is 90k vs. Sherriville’s 194k. Now, last I checked Carson’s wasn’t a charity and they are in business to make money. Who do you think has more disposable income? Hammond or Sherriville? Hmm...

CPS at Woodmar draws shoppers from across the region and has for decades. The proposed site in Schererville is in an already crowed shopping area with poor road infrastructure. Furthermore, Hammond will benefit from keeping this store (and the tax revenue it generates for the city) in Hammond. The site is a prime candidate for redevelopment with better infrastructure opportunites and is much closer to I80/94. Keep Carsons in Hammond where the store will do more to fight poverty, provide jobs & tax revenue more than a person holding a sign to protest ever will.

Fair enough, I screwed up the name of the town. My mistake. However, what I said was/is still true.

Going to Woodmar Mall was a big deal when I was a kid. It was before everything was so built up out towards both South Lake mall and River Oaks, and closer to home than both of those as well. It was a safe place where you could leave your parents for a little while and do some exploring on your own without fearing for your life.

Fast forward 20+ years...

As an adult, I believe you really risk your health and safety shopping there.(Granted, its been awhile since I've been there, apparently much of it has been bulldozed?) On the occasions when I visited the region and dared enter Woodmar, one could not walk through the mall without being given hard looks from the thugs and their ilk. I pitied the seniors of the area who had no other option but to shop there, since it was close to home.

(Having said this...River Oaks and Southlake are not much better. The same thugs seem to breed at mall food courts)

In any event, River Oaks went ahead and did away with the outdoor mall idea and enclosed all their stores. Why go back in time to the outdoor mall idea? Its COLD up there during the Christmas shopping season!!! There is no way I would choose an outdoor mall over an indoor one when I was planning on spending several hours doing shopping.

Did you sniff glue at the Hobby Shop or play at the arcade? I bet you worked at Jimmy's Olympian or ate food at either The Court of Lions or Court of Turtles. Are you too young to remember these places in Woodmar? Oh the memories. I say go ahead and leave it there and help people have a place closer to home so they can shop.

The funny thing I remember was the Convenient Store on 165th and Grand had hats that said, "I Love Hamond" that's right, they misspelled Hammond. That was a classic!

I think that's part of the idea to eliminate the "people hanging out" by making it an outdoor mall. I mean who's going to want to "hang" in the cold?

Shop or go home!

True that... we need places with good parking lots to park. Trustworthy places... I sometimes wonder if we are stuck in the best Chicago era, where people have subways and stuff... we cant walk to grocers and doctors here.

Uh oh...Dating myself here...Remember Downtown Hammond? Goldblatts, E C Minas Co, the Paramount, the Parthenon, the dime store...What was it's name? & great greasy cheesburgers at, was it Walgreens?

What great childhood memories. I haven't been back there in years...and years!

I remember Woodmar, but it didn't hold a candle to Downtown!

Now downtown looks like somebody held a candle to it for years... actually a blow torch. It is really sad to see how far that city has gone. I drove through last week and the days of beauty that it once had are all but lost. My parents have many fond memories of Hammond as well, my memories are not that positive.

There were a few greasy cheeseburger joints - I remember Gene's next to the E C Minas store and also Maderite's. It really SUCKS to getting older - MHS '79 Now in Pacific Northwest.
